Base FM 106.2 Namibia

Base FM 106.2 Namibia Base Fm was originally known as Katutura Community Radio (KCR) until 2008 was changed as a way to reflect its new energized essence and purpose.

The change of the name was also a way for the station to re-energies and spruce up its image, and expand its listener-ship to include the more professional and older listener’s. KCR was established in 1995 as the first community radio station in independent Namibia by a number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as the umbrella NGO group, Nangof, trade unions and the Council of Churches

in Namibia (CCN).Its objective then was to encourage the communities of Katutura, Khomasdal and their environs to take part in producing ethical, creative and responsible radio that would allow these communities to participate in decisions affecting their lives. In an environment formerly known for stifling community voices, the station's vision was also to promote communication within these communities, and to promote and celebrate the different cultures of the peoples of Katutura and Khomasdal, and affirm their once crushed dignity and identity KCR was established to serve as a pilot project for the future establishment of community radio stations throughout Namibia, and to contribute to the establishment of these stations in Namibia. From a media survey that was conducted in 2007, it was established that the station's main listener group comes from the 14- to 24-year-olds; the second largest listener group are the 25- to 30-year-olds.
