Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state has drawn sharp reactions from the international community, with Somalia condemning the move as a “deliberate attack” on its sovereignty.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday announced Israel’s formal recognition of Somaliland, Somalia’s breakaway northern region, following the signing of a joint declaration between the two sides.

Somaliland welcomed the decision, calling it “a milestone in Somaliland's long pursuit of international legitimacy” that reaffirms its “historical, legal and moral entitlement to statehood”, according to a statement signed by President Abdirahman Abdillahi.

However, Somalia, the African Union and the Arab League have said Israel’s action undermines Somalia’s territorial integrity and risks setting a dangerous precedent with far-reaching implications for regional peace and stability.

In a statement, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that it “will not permit the establishment of any foreign military bases or arrangements on its territory that would draw Somalia into proxy conflicts.”

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf also expressed concern, calling for respect for the principle of the inviolability of borders inherited at independence, as affirmed in the 1964 decision of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).

Israel’s closest ally, the United States, said it is not prepared to recognise Somaliland’s statehood, as President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu are due to meet on Monday.

Somaliland, which has a population of about six million, declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has since been governed as a republic with democratically elected administrations.

Five years after he disappeared in Lüderitz, Spencer Mandela Nakale has still not been found.

Spencer was nearly four years old when he vanished from Lüderitz during the festive season in December 2020.

The festive season remains a painful reminder for Spencer’s mother, Julia Ndafyaalako, who wrote on Facebook, “5 years later, I am still searching for my son. So God, please.”

Authorities have previously stated that they have not received any confirmed information about Spencer's location, and their investigations into his disappearance are still ongoing.

On the day he vanished, Spencer was staying in Area Seven in Lüderitz with relatives.

Below is an age-progression AI-generated image showing how Spencer might look now at age 10.

Traffic disruption occurred in Orwetoveni in Otjiwarongo after a truck was left stationary in the middle of the road in front of the municipality offices when the driver refused a breathalyser test.

The incident began when the driver sped off towards the informal settlement area after refusing the test. Police later intercepted and blocked the truck at the Orwetoveni location.

According to information from the scene, a traffic officer who tried to speak to the driver through the vehicle window was pushed away when the driver opened the door and slammed it shut.

The driver then locked himself inside the truck and refused to exit, obstructing the road for several hours. Law enforcement officers stayed at the scene, urging him to open the truck and clear the roadway, while advising motorists to use alternative routes.

After prolonged efforts to secure cooperation, police contacted the truck’s owner, who authorised officers to break a side window, only after exhausting all other alternatives.

Officers then sprayed tear gas through the opening, forcing the driver to exit after breathing difficulties.

Police confirmed the driver will face charges including refusing to comply with instructions and obstructing traffic, among other offences.

He is expected to appear in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
