Three people died and four others were injured in a road accident in Bwabwata National Park at Chetto on Saturday.

The accident involved a station wagon and a truck, which collided while travelling in opposite directions. The truck was heading to Walvis Bay, while the station wagon was travelling towards Katima Mulilo.

The impact caused the station wagon, carrying seven people, to overturn.

The truck was carrying three people. Its driver sustained minor injuries, while the two passengers escaped without injuries.

Frustrations continue to mount among the Muyako residents over delays in completing the 10-kilometre Bukalo–Muyako road.

Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi visited the area to assess the situation and establish the causes of the delays. He said the visit also sought to understand the challenges affecting the project and determine the best way forward to ensure its completion.

Nekundi explained that the contract was awarded by the Central Procurement Board, rather than the Ministry of Works and Transport, limiting the ministry’s authority to terminate the contract.

He said the ministry made a presentation in June this year requesting the termination of the contract due to the slow progress of the project. However, the request was not approved.

The project was initially scheduled for completion by 25 September, but the contractor has been granted an extension and has committed to completing the road by 24 November this year.

Following engagements between the ministry, contractor and other stakeholders, a revised work schedule was agreed upon to improve implementation and ensure the project is completed within the revised timeframe.

Community members, however, expressed frustration over the continued delays, highlighting the impact of the incomplete road on residents and road users.

Responding to the concerns, Nekundi further clarified that the contractual arrangements between the Central Procurement Board and the contractor do not allow the contract to be terminated until 90 days after the project’s scheduled completion date.

The Swapo Party leadership in the Zambezi Region has been urged to turn political influence into economic growth. The call was made at the official opening of the Swapo Party leadership training workshop in Katima Mulilo.

Speaking at the opening, the Swapo Party’s Zambezi Regional Coordinator, Linken Chibozu, has challenged political leaders to move beyond political control and translate the party’s strong hold into economic development.

Chibozu highlighted key projects in agriculture, trade and tourism that are lagging behind.

In response, Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi said that the ministry has officially started with the comprehensive study for Namibia to develop the railway network up to the Katima Mulilo Border Post.

Nekundi also added that progress has been made with the finalisation of the design of the road expansion from the Liselo check point to the border post at a cost of N$10 million.

The Swapo Party Secretary General, Sophia Shaningwa, further emphasised that the workshop is aimed at equipping leaders with the skills necessary to implement without delay.

A delegation from the Office of the Vice President, led by Moses ||Khumub, the Deputy Minister in the Office of the Vice President, has concluded its visit to Tsumkwe. During the trip, the delegation engaged with the !Kung and Ju|'oansi Traditional Authorities, as well as the organising committee for the San Cultural Festival, scheduled for September 21–26 in Tsumkwe.

According to ||Khumub, the engagement was fruitful. He said the purpose of the visit was to consult local chiefs on matters of community development, adding that the core mandate of his office is to foster strong relationships with San and other marginalised communities.

He noted that while the San Festival was not part of the original visit, he requested an update on its preparations. He confirmed that preparations are progressing well, with both traditional authorities currently finalising the details. They are expected to provide an official update later this week ahead of the festival, scheduled for the end of the month.

||Khumub will next travel to Oshakati, where he is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the 3rd Annual Northern Region Disability Sharing Seminar on Monday, 7 September.

An unidentified person was burnt beyond recognition after the vehicle they were travelling in allegedly lost control, left the road and collided with a tree at Otuvingo Village in the Okakarara Constituency during the early hours of Saturday.

The Otjozondjupa Police Spokesperson and Community Liaison Officer, Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha, said the vehicle, a Nissan NP200, whose registration number and colour are still unknown, caught fire following the collision.

Police suspect the driver was travelling alone.

The remains were retrieved from the burnt vehicle and transported to the Otjiwarongo Police Mortuary, they will then be transferred to Windhoek for forensic examination to assist with identification.

Investigators also retrieved the vehicle’s engine number, which is expected to assist with further investigations and the identification of the deceased.

The next of kin have not yet been established.

Police investigations continue.

Local entrepreneurs have gathered at the City of Windhoek’s Spring Market to showcase and sell their products while connecting with potential customers.

The market features a variety of Namibian-made products, including jewellery, peanut butter, kapana, marula oil and handbags.

Entrepreneurs say the platform helps create awareness of their businesses and supports growth, but more such opportunities are needed across the city.

The City of Windhoek’s Section Head for SME Development, Leonora Joodt, says the market forms part of the city’s efforts to support small businesses through platforms, training and business development programmes.

The Windhoek Spring Market concludes at midnight tonight.

Reigning Miss Pre-Teen Africa Namibia 2026, Lizaan Kamburute, was welcomed home by family, friends, community members and members of the ||Kharas Governor’s Youth Desk on Saturday.

The group gathered at the “Welcome to Keetmanshoop” sign to celebrate her title and expressed their pride in the young beauty queen from the ||Kharas Region.

Kamburute is a Grade 9 learner at P.K. de Villiers Secondary School in Keetmanshoop. She was crowned Miss Pre-Teen Africa Namibia 2026 at the Miss Pre-Teen Africa Namibia pageant held in Windhoek on 29 August.

The newly crowned winner will go on to represent Namibia at the international Miss Pre-Teen Africa pageant, which will take place in Botswana in December 2026.

The Youth Desk is expected to host a formal congratulatory programme for Kamburute on Tuesday.

A group of businesspeople in the Ohangwena Region have contributed N$111,000 towards the construction of a new fence around the Swapo Party’s regional headquarters in Eenhana.

The contribution was announced during a Regional Executive Committee meeting held on Saturday, where members discussed progress and resources mobilised for the project.

The existing fence is in poor condition, leaving party property vulnerable to theft and vandalism.

Regional Coordinator Josua Phillemon thanked the business community and party members for their support, urging them to remain united in strengthening the party.

The business community also submitted a white paper outlining its concerns and expectations from the party and government. Among the key concerns was limited access to finance for businesses.

The document was handed over to Phillemon by business representative Fillip Nghikumwa.

The party has so far raised more than N$300,000 towards the fence, which is estimated to cost N$365,000.
Phillemon also presented certificates of appreciation to members of the business community for their contributions. The certificates were handed over by the chairperson of leaders assigned to the Ohangwena Region, Lucia Ilpumbu.

Tributes continue to pour in for the late Lamech Mwanyangapo, the long-serving NBC camera operator and sales executive who died a week ago today.

Among those mourning his passing is Paul Nanyeni, a deaf human rights activist and advocate, who remembers Mwanyangapo not only as a professional but also as a true community hero.

Nanyeni’s bond with the veteran cameraman dates back to his days as a student at the University of Namibia.
Mwanyangapo consistently used his media platform to highlight Nanyeni’s personal journey, including his need for medical support to receive a hearing implant.

Thanks to Mwanyangapo’s drumming and spearheading of sponsorship efforts, which included an Air Namibia travel ticket, Nanyeni was able to travel to the United States in 2006 for his cochlear implant operation.

Upon Nanyeni’s return to Namibia, Mwanyangapo remained a beacon of support, continuing to document his academic journey and triumphs through the camera lens.

Nanyeni expressed his condolences to Mwanyangapo’s NBC colleagues, family and the nation, adding that the family, the Namibian community and he himself have lost a hero who was entirely dedicated to helping others.

A delegation from the Office of the Vice President, led by Deputy Minister Moses ||Khumub, visited the Ju|'oansi Traditional Authority in Tsumkwe for a meet-and-greet engagement with Chief Tsamkxao Bobo ‡Oma.

The delegation included Rebekka Namwandi, Deputy Director of the Division of Marginalised Communities, and Petronella Golo, the Development Planner assigned to the Otjozondjupa Region.

During the engagement, ||Khumub stated that the visit aimed to strengthen cooperation between the Office of the Vice President and the Traditional Authority. He reminded the Chief that traditional leaders serve as principal advisors to the President on issues affecting their communities, under the guidance of the Traditional Authorities Act.

||Khumub subsequently entered a closed session with the Traditional Councillors and is scheduled to meet later with the organising committee of the first San-led national cultural festival, slated for 21–26 September, to discuss the way forward.
