OMAHEKE POLICE URGE PUBLIC TO MAKE USE OF SEPTEMBER FI***RM AMNESTY

The Namibian Police Force in the Omaheke Region is urging members of the public to make use of the September Amnesty Month by voluntarily surrendering illegal fi****ms, am******on and armaments.

Speaking to TYSFM NBC News, Chief Inspector Fina Sakajengenga encouraged people in possession of illegal fi****ms to hand them over to the police as part of the nationwide amnesty initiative.

She explained that the amnesty is intended to help remove illegal fi****ms and other dangerous items from communities and contribute to public safety.

The initiative covers different types of fi****ms, including handguns, ri**es, revolvers, hunting fi****ms and other fi****ms, as well as am******on and explosive-related items.

Sakajengenga warned that illegal fi****ms can pose a serious threat to communities because they may be used in serious crimes such as murder and armed robbery.

She also addressed people who may have inherited old fi****ms from parents or grandparents.

According to Sakajengenga, simply inheriting an old fi***rm does not automatically make its possession legal. Such fi****ms must be properly licensed and documented in accordance with the law.

People who have the necessary documentation can approach the police and follow the appropriate procedures to regularise their fi****ms. Those who do not have the required documentation are encouraged to voluntarily surrender them during the amnesty period.

The police are also encouraging members of the public who possess am******on or explosive-related items to contact the police for assistance in surrendering them safely.

The amnesty is being implemented across Namibia, including the Omaheke Region and Corridor 21.

The official poster issued by the Namibian Police in Omaheke states that the September Amnesty Month provides for “No Arrest, No Prosecution” for the voluntary surrender of the relevant illegal arms and related items under the amnesty.

Members of the public are advised to surrender fi****ms at their nearest police station.

Sakajengenga further cautioned the public against handing fi****ms to people who may falsely claim to be police officers collecting weapons under the amnesty. Members of the public should use official police channels and, where necessary, contact their nearest police station or station commander.

For people who cannot safely travel to a police station, arrangements can be made with the police for assistance with the surrender.

The surrendered fi****ms and related items will be recorded and processed by the police before being dealt with according to the applicable procedures.

The September Amnesty Month runs from 1 to 30 September 2026.

Update: Eight Bakgalagadi community members granted bail in malicious damage to property case

Eight Bakgalagadi community members made their first court appearance today in the Gobabis Regional Magistrate’s Court in connection with a case of malicious damage to property.

The matter was heard before Magistrate B. Ortner, with State Prosecutor Kamati Nyipondoka representing the State.

The accused were informed of their rights, including the option to appoint private legal representatives at their own expense, apply for legal representation through Legal Aid, or represent themselves in court.

Accused 1, Petrus Masaka, opted to represent himself, as did Accused 2, Kasper Sethibang, Accused 3, Sara Babotse, Accused 4, Selina Babotse, Accused 5, Anna Becky, Accused 7, Engelbertha Babotse, and Accused 8, Jorine Babotse.

Accused 6, Pulcheria Masaka, informed the court that she has legal representation through LegalWise.

The State Prosecutor informed the court that the State would not separate the matters and that all eight accused would be dealt with collectively, despite one of the accused having legal representation.

The State requested bail of N$2,000 for each accused and asked for the matter to be postponed to 24 November 2026 to allow the accused with legal representation to engage her legal team.

Magistrate Ortner granted bail at N$1,000 for each accused and postponed the matter to 24 November 2026.

The eight suspects were arrested on Friday afternoon in Khori Pos 21, following allegations that they cut a fence belonging to the complainant, who subsequently opened a case of malicious damage to property against them.

It is alleged that the accused damaged the fence as an act of retaliation after the complainant allegedly damaged padlocks, pipes and other equipment at a community garden.

Speaking on the matter, Boxer Masaka, a member of the Bakgalagadi Community Elders Council, said the dispute is known to relevant authorities in the Omaheke Region, including the Regional Governor Piijo Nganate.

Masaka appealed to community members not to take matters into their own hands, while calling on the relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served.
The matter has been postponed to 24 November 2026.

Gobabis: Ten Bakgalagadi community members arrested over alleged damage to property

Ten members of the Bakgalagadi community at Corridor Pos 21 in Aminuis constituency were arrested on Friday afternoon by the Namibian Police Force from Corridor Pos 13 Police Station in connection with allegations of damage to property.

The arrests have been confirmed by the Chairperson of the Bakgalagadi Trading Authority, Mr Kaiser, who told NBC TYS FM that he was not present when the arrests were made. He says, however, that he is following up on the matter and is engaging relevant authorities.

NAMPOL's Corridor Pos 13 Police Station has also
confirmed the arrests. Warrant Officer Jantjies says the ten suspects are expected to appear before the Gobabis Regional Magistrate's Court tomorrow(Tuesday) at 09:00.

Among those arrested is reportedly a senior traditional councillor of the Bakgalagadi Traditional Authority.

The allegations stem from an incident at a community garden in Corridor Pos 21, where community members allegedly retaliated by cutting the complainant's fence.

The action reportedly followed allegations that the complainant had damaged pipes, padlocks and other property belonging to the community garden.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged damage and the events leading to the arrests are expected to be addressed through the court process.
