SPORT TARGETS BROADER PARTICIPATION AND INVESTMENT

The Namibian polo season came to an end this weekend, concluding months of competition and shifting attention to efforts aimed at growing the sport in the country.

While the season may be over on the field, organisers say their focus has now shifted to increasing participation and strengthening the foundations of the sport.

Polo trainer and manager at La Muela, Mariano Mazitelli, said the off-season provides an opportunity to attract new players and raise awareness of polo in Namibia.

“We have one of the best international polo clubs, and I am really proud of our facilities, our horses, and our organisation here.”

The Argentinean workers learn from scratch how to care for, train, and prepare the horses for play, because polo involves more than just the match.

FC ONGOS CLAIM TITLE ON FINAL DAY

What looked like a straightforward path to back-to-back titles for league leaders Mighty Gunners Ladies turned into a dramatic final chapter of the FNB Women’s Super League season, as FC Ongos Ladies seized the championship on the final day.

FC Ongos Ladies entered their final fixture at the Julinho Athletic Stadium knowing only a victory against Julinho Athletic, combined with a slip-up from the league leaders elsewhere, would be enough to secure the crown.

FC Ongos took control of their own destiny early, producing a dominant first-half display that left no room for error. The breakthrough came in the 21st minute when Memory Ngonda opened the scoring. The momentum continued to build as Boitumelo Gammu doubled the advantage in the 34th minute. Just six minutes later, Ivonne Kooper struck a third, handing FC Ongos a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the halftime interval.
