Taradi Donates Sanitary Pads to Epako High School Girls

A local women’s group, Taradi, has donated sanitary pads to girls at Epako High School in Gobabis. A total of 288 sanitary pads were handed over to support learners in need.

Speaking to Kaisames NBC News, the Chairperson of the group, Mrs Isidora Bok, said the donation was motivated by the challenges many families are facing.

She explained that some parents are currently unemployed and can not afford to buy sanitary pads for their daughters. As a result, the group decided to step in to support the girls and help protect their dignity.

Mrs Bok said the initiative was fully funded by the women themselves. They came together, contributed money from their own pockets, and bought the sanitary pads without any external assistance.

“As women and mothers, we did not want to focus only on our own children, but to look beyond and help those in need,” she said.

She also encouraged other women in the community to join them every Sunday for gatherings held under a tree, where they share information and discuss important issues affecting women and the girl child. These discussions also focus on supporting widows and promoting the importance of culture.

Another member of the group, Mrs Katrina /Goagoses, said the organisation has bigger plans for the future. She noted that they aim to also support the boy child, assist the elderly, and eventually establish a soup kitchen.

She further encouraged young girls to value themselves and protect their dignity.

“You must protect your self-worth. You are the first person responsible for how you present yourself before expecting others to respect you,” she said.

The event was attended by the Councilor of the Gobabis Constituency, Honorable Liberius Kalili, who came to support the initiative.

Gobabis today joined the rest of the world in commemorating World TB Day, with a community-centered event aimed at raising awareness about tuberculosis (TB), its prevention, and the importance of early treatment.

The commemoration brought together health officials, community members, and various stakeholders, all united under a common goal of fighting TB and promoting healthier communities. The event featured educational talks, community engagement activities, and health awareness messages emphasizing the need for regular testing and adherence to treatment.

Minister James Sankwasa Declares Gobabis Councilors’ Swearing-In “Illegal”

The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Hon. Sankwasa has strongly condemned the swearing-in of the Right to Shelter councilors that took place this morning, 23 March 2026, in Gobabis, describing the process as illegal and not in line with the Electoral Act.

Speaking to Kaisames FM, the Minister emphasized that the authority to determine who is sworn into a Local Authority Council lies strictly with the Electoral Commission, guided by the gazetted party list as prescribed by law. He explained that while political parties are allowed to amend their candidate lists before elections, any changes made after elections are invalid and unlawful.

The Minister confirmed that the matter will now be taken for judicial review, indicating that only the courts have the authority to set aside the decision.

Additionally, Hon. Sankwasa announced that no Deputy Mayor will be sworn in until the matter is resolved. He assured that the council could continue to function under the mayor alone, as permitted by law.

Hon. Wynand Lukas from The right to shelder organization in response stated that the three sworn-in councillors will continue serving as ordinary councillors, in line with the Minister’s position that no Deputy Mayor will be elected until the court decision.

He further stated that the organisation followed the correct procedures to reach the stage of being sworn in.

However, he expressed concern that not being part of the Management Committee will negatively affect the organisation, as they will not participate in key decision-making processes until the matter is resolved and a Deputy Mayor is elected.

He concluded by saying that the organisation will respect the legal process and await the outcome of the High Court, as indicated by the Minister.

KAISAMES FM NEWS UPDATE

Today, Monday, 23 March 2026, the official swearing-in of three Right to Shelter councilors took place at the Gobabis Municipality chamber. Speaking to Kaisames News, Hon. Cllr. Wynand Lukas affirmed that they will uphold a culture of transparency and ensure regular reporting to the community.

He emphasized that, having been elected by the people, it is their duty to keep residents informed on matters of development and to provide the community with an opportunity to voice their concerns.

Cllr. Lukas further noted that while they entered office as Right to Shelter councillors, their responsibility now extends to serving all residents of Gobabis, not just members of the organization.

The councilors sworn in are:

* Cllr. Veronia Mokaleng
* Cllr. Aletha |Uiras
* Cllr. Wynand Lukas

The ceremony follows a period of delays and internal processes within the association, which had temporarily affected representation at the council level.
