After violent civil unrest rocked Nouméa in 2024, nearly 11,000 people left , most of them French nationals. Among them was Renaud Mahé, a hotel manager who helped evacuate stranded guests before relocating his family to French Polynesia.
The violence, sparked by proposed electoral reforms, left deep scars: 13 dead, widespread destruction, and a collapsing local economy. The territory now faces a shortage of doctors, mass unemployment, and a shrinking population.
With political dialogue slowly resuming, hopes rest on a lasting agreement between pro- and anti-independence groups. As Mahé put it: "My hope would be for a quick solution… it's going to be very tough on whoever stayed behind."
