Rethinking Gatherings in an Age of Digital Possibilities
By Levi Emmanuel Onyenchere
Introduction
Every age in human history leaves behind a remarkable testimony and legacy. Each generation experiences unique developments that shape the way people live, communicate, and interact.
There was a time when the world had no television, yet people communicated effectively through letters, messengers, and simple channels. Later came the telegram and other forms of communication. Today, humanity lives in a digital era where communication can happen instantly across continents through mobile phones and internet platforms.
Each stage of development comes with its own hazards and adjustments. Humanity must continually learn how to adapt and make wise use of the tools available in every generation.
The Source of Knowledge and Innovation
It is important to recognize that wisdom, knowledge, and power ultimately come from God. Human beings may discover and develop technologies, but the capacity for innovation is itself a divine gift.
Scientists, engineers, and professionals across the world deserve commendation for their contributions in making the world more connected. Through their work, communication and collaboration across nations have become easier than ever before.
However, while innovation is human responsibility, the wise utilization of it remains essential.
The Importance of Digital Utilization
The effective use of digital technology has become increasingly important, particularly in a world where safety concerns are rising in many regions.
Wars continue to increase, insecurity is growing in many parts of the world, and transportation systems in developing nations still pose significant risks. In such circumstances, the opportunities provided by digital communication should not be ignored.
Today, platforms such as Google Meet, Zoom, and other digital communication channels allow people to hold meetings, share ideas, and make decisions without the necessity of physical gatherings. In many cases, these virtual engagements can produce results that are just as effective as traditional meetings.
Rethinking Physical Gatherings
Religious institutions such as churches and mosques remain vital centers for spiritual growth and communal life. However, the realities of the modern world call for thoughtful reflection on how gatherings are organized.
The era of excessive crowding may gradually give way to more balanced approaches where digital platforms complement physical meetings.
Online services, virtual conferences, and remote prayer sessions can help reduce unnecessary risks while still maintaining spiritual engagement. Digital participation does not reduce spirituality; rather, it can extend the reach of spiritual teachings and allow more people to participate safely.
Wisdom in Times of Uncertainty
Faith remains an essential part of human life. However, faith should not eliminate wisdom and responsibility.
God indeed protects and provides, but He has also given humanity the ability to think, plan, and make wise decisions. These gifts should be applied especially in environments where security challenges exist.
In some parts of Nigeria today, reports of banditry and insecurity are frequent. Therefore, late-night crusades, large gatherings in vulnerable areas, and even unnecessary travel may need to be reconsidered.
Wisdom teaches that although many things may be important, not everything is expedient at every moment.
Conclusion
The digital age presents humanity with an extraordinary opportunity to rethink how we communicate, collaborate, and gather.
Technology has made it possible for people to connect across distances while reducing certain risks associated with physical gatherings. When used wisely, digital tools can enhance safety, strengthen communication, and expand opportunities for learning and spiritual growth.
As society continues to evolve, the challenge before us is not merely to admire technological advancement, but to use it responsibly and wisely for the benefit of humanity.
