Abia Governor Announces Subsidized Fares for Electric Buses, Digital Payment Only

Umuahia, Abia State – Governor Alex Otti has revealed plans for the rollout of electric buses across the state, promising subsidized fares and a shift to digital payment.

Speaking during his February media chat, Gov. Otti said fares for the new electric buses would be affordable. Travel from Umuahia to Aba is expected to cost around ₦700–₦800, while trips to Ohafia will be about ₦1,000. “It’s going to be cheap,” he emphasized.

Governor Otti also highlighted a move toward digital transformation, noting that cash will not be accepted, and passengers will be required to pay using cards. “We need to begin to move up the ladder l, digital transformation. That’s where the world has gone, and we can’t be different,” he said.

The Governor further disclosed that the Umuahia Bus Terminal is nearing completion and is expected to be officially commissioned soon. Once operational, all state buses will run from the terminal.

Concluding his remarks, Gov. Otti expressed optimism for the coming month: “I pray that March will be better for all of us than February"
