Yerima, escapes ãssassinátion attempt in FCT this evening
A young Nigerian Navy officer, Lt. A. M. Yerima, who recently clãshed with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, reportedly survived an attempted a¿¿a{ss]ination on Sunday evening.
According to military sources who spoke with news men, Yerima was trailed by unknown men dressed in black and driving two unmarked Hilux vans with no number plates. They allegedly followed him from the NIPCO filling station along the Line Expressway to Gado Nasco Way.
Sensing d(a)nger, the officer made a sharp strategic move and managed to shake off the suspected att[a]ckers. The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. and is now under investigation. Authorities say they are keeping some details confidential so they don’t compromise the probe.
This development comes just days after Yerima, while on duty, had a heated confrontätion with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike at a disputed land site in Gaduwa. The video went viral and sparked widespread debate. The Presidency later stepped in and stopped the dem0lition at the location.
Following the cläsh, military veterans across the country condemned Wike for verbally insulting the officer and warned against any disciplinary action. The spokesman for the Coalition of Retired Veterans, Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, said they would occupy the office and residence of the FCT Minister if Yerima is punished.
He stressed that soldiers serve Nigeria, not individual politicians, and insisted that Wike must apologise for calling a naval officer “a fuul” on camera.
The Minister of Defence, Mohammad Badaru Abubakar, has also reassured the public that no officer performing lawful duties will be sanctioned. He said the government will always stand by security personnel who carry out their jobs professionally.
Veterans had earlier vowed to storm the FCT Ministry if Yarima faced any form of punishment.
