Chapter One – A Happy Beginning

Chika thought marriage was a bed of roses. She had been married to Uche for four years, blessed with one daughter. At first, everything was filled with love and laughter. They went on dates, prayed together, and held hands like newlyweds. But slowly, things began to change. Uche became distant, always busy, and Chika could not understand why.

Questions:

1. How many years had Chika been married to Uche?

2. What was the name of their child?

3. What was the first sign of change in Uche’s behavior?

Chapter Ten

The Senator’s Ring

The darkness pressed in on Nkem, heavy and suffocating. She gripped the edge of the table, her fingers brushing the notebook again.

“Why do you have his ring?” she demanded, though her voice shook.

The figure moved closer, slow and unhurried. In the faint moonlight, the silver glint of the ring caught her eye—a perfect match to the one Senator Agu never took off.

But this man was not the senator.

“You still don’t see,” he said softly. “He gave it to me… the night before the fire.”

Her mind raced. The fire. The whispers. The hurried phone calls she had overheard.

“What do you want from me?” she asked.

The man leaned closer, and she could feel his breath on her ear.

“Everything he promised you,” he said. “And everything he never told you.”

Before she could speak, the notebook was gone from the table, and the door swung open—not by her hand, but his.

“Leave,” he said, stepping into the shadows once more. “Before you learn why I took the blame.”

And then, just as suddenly as he had appeared, he was gone.

Chapter 9: The Truth Unlocked

Chiamaka laid everything bare.

The letter. The voice recording. The files from the storage room.

Senator Agu collapsed into his chair. “Her mother… she wrote me that letter when she disappeared.”

Ekaette was brought back into the room.

The old man looked at her, tears in his eyes. “You have her eyes…”

“I don’t want your money,” Ekaette whispered. “I just wanted to know who I was.”

“I was weak,” he said. “I hid your mother. I was ashamed.”

“But I lived,” Ekaette replied. “And now you’ll never be able to forget me.”
