IGBA ABA IN IZHIA

The reasons for igba aba during burial in izhia has become a talk of the day, as many do not know the essence or reason.

Yes, many do not know why IGBA ABA is Compulsorily conducted during burial in izhia.

In Izhia land, it is Culturally made compulsory that during one's burial, the left over is usually teken to a marathon race known in izhia as igba aba, where family and friends, loved ones and many others accompanies the direct victim of the burial to the race known in izhia as igba aba. during this race, the family members, especially the closest relation to the deceased is usually taken to the race of igba aba. this is done to announce exit. yes igba aba is done to administer one's grievances towards the demise of loved one and secondly to announce exit.

The essence of "igba aba" is to administer grief and to announce exit. This "igba aba" is usually followed with this song "añyi acho ya, añyi afuro ya". that's we have searched everywhere but was unable to see him/her.

When set, one is to queue according to either age or most loved individual of the household. the deceased photograph is taken along, usually is the closest relation with some phantom of wrapper tied across his waíst, this movement is violent free as the essence is only to announce the exit of the deceased.

when taken the igba aba exercise, usually is ATTAH NWOROKE song. it's sanged before and after the igba aba. the first ATTAH NWOROKE is sanged to register the start of the "ABA", while the second one is sanged to declare it's closure. it's Culturally okay that the involved members of the "ABA", moves with some items like palm fronds, sticks, branches of tree and many more.

When the group has moved to a distance of choice and wishes to return, two to three persons usually arrive with palm fronds before the full group. this they do to announce the exit of the deceased. they run back to meet the congregation before the arrival of the full house. when arrived, every stick or any object taken to the ABA is submitted to the tomb else serves another negative purpose.

The ATTAH NWOROKE song is sanged the second time to announce Closure of the ABA and final exit of the deceased.

Ije/igba aba is done twice in the burial of a person. it's done at the wake keeping and during the main burial. meanwhile, one who refused to engage in ABA during the burial of his own parents is Culturally not permitted to do it for others in izhia. it's spiritually guarded.

During the closure of "ABA", comes what we call "ibu aba", this ibu aba is usually done by either the closest relation or member of the mourning household. it is today done with money/okpoga. before now it used to be coming to enjoin in the last song before the closure. however, it's called ibu aba in izhia.

Religion aside as both the blue and the white in respect to religion does it in izhia land. else, automatically segregate one from doing it for others.

ETHICALITY OF OBOBO COMMUNITY IN EBONYI L.G.A

By
COMR. IDOKO IKECHUKWU OGWA (TANGIBLE)

Obobo Community is a community under the political geography of Ebonyi local government area of Ebonyi State.

The inhabitants of Obodo community is made up of Umuagara, Ntsurakpa, Amike and of Ameshi greater number in izhia. However, all the kindreds as seen in izhia today are all available in Obobo/ishieke community.

The combination of all the inhabitants in the community of Obodo can best be referred as "AMOTA".

However, Obobo is not part of Ohaukwu local government by political geography like I said earlier. it is classified under Ebonyi local government area in Ebonyi State but the make-ups has every traceable identity to Izhia, particularly the four basic communities that formerly make up izhia not minding that Ishielu community has today being added to sum it five Communities in izhia land.

Go to Obodo community today, they speak the same language with izhia people though many of them can also speak izzi language as they host clan. Burial rite as performed in izhia today are also done there.

There is no OBOBO man without dual political identity, many are enjoying double political rights, worthy of knowledge is that there is no OBOBO man without a familiarizing house in izhia. They are there purposely not only for "okpata Nri" i.e in search of greener pasture but as the direct acquirer of the said land from the host community of ishieke.

Many izhia kindreds are living there today under the cultural land acquisition known as imagbe ogbù in izhia language. imagbe ogbù has been extended to Obobo for above decades without conflicting with the host community ishieke.

They standard of living, I.e they Cultural life is in life with izhia. Every Cultural pattern of the izhia are also played there, sometimes, they travel long and afar to enjoin izhia people as they progenitor. Meanwhile, the itsukwe yam festival, odabara and igede Cultural da

NMERU (CONDEMNATION) IN IZHIA

NMERU is the most effective or the highest step taken to uncover or administer justice in izhia. It encompasses the outright clan condemnation of a person or group of an individual who commits an abominable acts like r**e, murder, vandalization of public belonging e.t.c but refused to disclose their identity.

The best way to neutralize it is to CONFESS it. It is not influenced by prayer as thinking that venturing into prayers would serve a help. It is almost impossible for a victim to live especially when he refuses to confess allowing NMERU to be conducted.

The izhia elders council takes to perform the rite using Kolanut in consultation of their "chi" eke keru uwa. Some times they walking sticks (Mgboro) becomes an instrument of working the NMERU, when it involves walking sticks, then, it's called "ITSU MGBORO" in izhia native language.

NMERU could be very deadly when mothers go naked on the road and probably starving to administer the gravity of they grief. Within a short time the culprit will definitely receive a divine intervention, justice and punishment that follows, unveiling every secrecies, the heat of the rite is usually robust to remain hidden. This religious practice is still in practice in izhia till today.

Every functions performed in the dark is made open through "NMERU". A victim will remain cursed when he/she refused to confess it and follow the conditions that follows thereafter, likely to die at immediate. It is an automatic case of do or die affair.

WHAT DO YOU CALL MONEY IN YOUR LANGUAGE❓. NOW, THIS IS WHAT IT IS CALLED IN IZHIA.

Money are known as "EGO" in Igbo language but it's called "OKPOGA" in izhia land. Usually, "OKPOGA" serves basically a medium of exchange.
Before now, we had what we grammatically call "Barter trading", i.e, exchange of goods for goods. This system of trading existed in izhia centuries far gone, it was practiced before the introduction of "EGO IGWE", "COINS" and "PAPER MONEY" of today. This Barter trading helped to a level by extracting what you have to give you what you do not have in exchange. izhia people enjoyed it so much as it assisted in quashing problems like having pepper but in need of rice.

"OKPOGA" in izhia land has different classification and nomenclatures used in identifying them by the izhia people. when this nomenclatures are interacted by izhians, an allien become a novice of the subject matter, I mean that an outsider cannot comprehend it.
Let me give us a tip of what "OKPOGA" are called in izhia. I wish to Start from the denomination of poñu ise, meaning ten naira (N10), poñu iri stand for twenty naira (N20), poñu iri le ise Is thirty naira ( N30), ukporo poñu for forty naira (N40), ukporo poñu ise for fifty naira( N50), Ekpa ego means (N200), Ekpa ego le okara stand for (N300), Ekpa ego ebo le okara means (N500), Ekpa ego eto means (N600), Ekpa ego Eno (N800), Ekpa ego Eno le okara for (N900) while Ekpa ego ise means (N1000). it continues till millions known in izhia as "UNU-KPUKU" .

When money reaches million, billions and so, it is called "UNU-KPUKU" in izhia. When you want to call a millionaire in izhia language, you can refer to him as "OKPEKU". meaning a wealthy man.

Paper money has over-rode everywhere of both in izhia and beyond today.

Above all, know your language, imbibe it and retent it.

NSHI EPFI CEMENT AND THE REFINED CEMENT OF TODAY

Between 1880's to 1990's, the refined Cement was never valued to the extent of today. infact, refined cement existed very late between izhia people.

Nshi epfi cement was preferably preferred over the refined cement as at that time. the Nshi epfi cement is a Cement made out of epfi (cow's) faeces. trowel as used by Mason's of today were Culturally called "OSHIBO". by then.

"OSHIBO" were used by mason to dress, maintain lines, and to make designs and as well to smoothen walls in the building.

The price of cement today shouldn't have been a burden to anybody, especially the izhians if we had kept to our Cultural beliefs.

The price of cement today is not affecting only the poor but has affected the rich as well, as both hardly afford it now.

Izhia people has the spirit of navigating to get they want, by this hardship comes big business to them. this is made possible by either switching to agricultural production or business oriented forecasting.

The Nshi epfi cement is very cool unlike today's cement plastering that is heating enough to boil water. centless and odourless as may be thought by hard thinking individual's.

OGBO IZHIA SOCIETY

Love your neighbor as yourself murdered by Christians of today are made manifest here in õgbo izhia society.

Ògbo means "Age grade", while Izhia is already an inseparable clan. When added together, it means, "izhia Age grade".

Ògbo izhia Is An inseparable union, group and society meant to provide and to also protect the interest of those belonging to it. Meanwhile, anyone who chose to become path and pacel of the sacred union must keep the rule of the Union, as one who defile the regulating rules of the Union calls death to avenge.

Becoming a member of the Union has to undergo some sacrificial process. It requires a blood covenant with one and another. In doing this, a lobe of Kolanut and dry meat (añu epfia) is usually brought forward to make the initiation 'DIVINE'. The Kolanut is broken, smeared with members blood and shared amongst, making them one people.

A member of this Union is restricted on many things that must be stated very clear to his acknowledgement. because an inch deviation from what it supposed to be amount DEATH.

The immunity of the Union is extended to every "RELATIONSHIP" of the members. Thus, a member of the Union can't dare evil plan against children, cousin, nephew, aunt of a fellow member, if he does that sanely, death avenges instantly. For instance, if your father is a member of the "ògbo izhia sacred Union", even when he is late, a member of the ògbo izhia can't dare plan evil against you as a left over of the same cult group, if he sees danger fore-coming on your way, it is his duty to blink the light of precaution to enable you escape it.

The ògbo izhia is still in existence till today, providing and protecting the interest of one another to the glory of God.

WHAT IS RICE LIKE TO IZHIA PEOPLE❓

Rice are known in izhia as Nri nwunu. i.e, food for the birds or an appetizer

in izhia, grain crops especially the rice are known and called Ereshi, nkpuru nwa ewa and Nri nwunu I.e ( food for the birds). Reason for this, is that rice doesn't satisfy to the taste of an izhia man. By long last, it doesn't last like other basic foods in izhia. for instance, if rice should last 2hrs before expiration, then akpu must extend 5hrs difference, this is why akpu and Nri 'ji' are called six to six by the izhians. Outside all this foods, we have ipfuru food basically the extraction of a preserved cassava chalf and many other foods.

in a Cultural outing, rice are usually considered off, Nri 'ji', and akpu are preferred instead.

We Culturally prefer swallow to Nri Nwunu (food for the birds)

INITIATION TO MASQUERADE CULT (IKPO IPFU MAH) IN IZHIA

I dedicate this work to~ High Chief Obele Ignatius Oruta (Ameshi Izhia)

As the season of masquerade approaches, parents takes they children to get them initiated into the kingdom of the masquerade. This they do to give greater freedom to they (male) children of participating actively in the affairs of masquerade.

However, Parents takes they males son's of about 7yrs and above who can keep secrets to get initiated in the masquerade groove, the affair are performed by the chief priest "atamah". On that note, an oath of secrecy are taken along with a Kolanut and a fowl, palm wine inclusive.

The movement of a person yet to take this step is restricted of especially at night, such an individual is not qualified to see a masquerade that has not lent itself to the public. If he does, he is said to have trespassed. When such thing happens, such an individual is conditioned on items to bring immediately to quickly get him initiated in order to avail himself.

The masquerade doesn't live the person alive when he override the above instructions, it's not influenced by any religion.

Meanwhile, if the sacrifices are performed. automatically, the person becomes a qualified member of the masquerade group and free to move both at night and take closer participation in the affairs of the masquerade in izhia.

METHODS OF SAYING AN ACCEPTABLE GREETINGS IN IZHIA. (Handshaking)

In a round table seating in Izhia land.

A cultured man takes his handshaking particularly from the right angle. Not middle, not left, I said right.

Failure to toe this step in izhia, announces him irresponsible son of an irresponsible parents and from an irresponsible home🤣

During this shaking, If one encounters a Woman amidst the sitting. You are culturally not meant to shake her in the palm like you did to the men.

It's either she observes a standing ovation quickly to hug you one-sided (basically for the married women) or she does that to hug you with her full chest (for the single Ladies). It is also Culturally okay that she only bows while you touches her back part.

This are method of greetings in izhia land that needed no mistakes. An izhia man who makes any mistake while doing this is not worth coming from izhia. In a sitting where one goes contrary to this, such an individual is seen not to come from izhia, especially when such person shakes from the left , he is acknowledged an ngbo man.

Know your Culture and stand safest side
