Ibeji is the Yoruba word for twins. Twins in Yoruba culture represents divinity. They are also considered orisas (gods). The first born is known as Taiwo. The second born is called Kehinde. But according to Yoruba tradition, Kehinde is considered the senior because Kehinde sends Taiwo into the world through birth to judge if it is beautiful and comfortable before following suit.

In Esan, they are known as Odion and Akhere. Together, they are referred to as Ibieva. Twins represent different ideas in different cultures and mythologies.

I believe Twins are God's way of emphasising unity and not uniformity necessarily. We don't have to look alike to be united and should we look alike, we are different inward and yet can be united still.

Twins are generally perceived as embodiments of good fortunes.
