TRAGEDY STRIKES: BOMB BLAST CLAIMS 5 LIVES, LEAVES MANY INJURED IN IMO STATE MARKET .

A tragic bomb explosion tore through Ubeheze Market in Awo Idemili, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State on Tuesday morning, killing at least five people and injuring numerous others.

The blast happened around 11 a.m., just as traders were settling in and opening their stalls for the day.

Eyewitnesses described the aftermath as a nightmare. “It was like a war zone,” one witness said. “Bodies were scattered across the ground. Blood everywhere. People were screaming and running for their lives.”

A video now circulating online shows chaotic scenes—wailing voices, debris scattered across the market, and shattered structures reduced to rubble.

Residents who spoke to The Nation under the condition of anonymity said they were in shock, grappling with fear and disbelief.

“We had just started the day. Traders were arranging their goods when a loud explosion rocked the market,” said one eyewitness. “Everything was destroyed wood, zinc sheets, items flew everywhere. People died instantly. Even children.”

Another resident, still visibly shaken, said: “The bomb exploded just as business had begun. I saw bodies, lifeless, and people writhing in pain. Who would do this? Why target a market? It’s senseless, it’s cruel.”

The blast left several stalls in ruins, with many market structures completely destroyed.

This attack adds to the growing list of violent incidents in Orsu LGA, an area that has seen increasing unrest in recent years. Many communities there are reportedly deserted due to ongoing security threats.

One local, speaking cautiously, explained: “No one wants to talk. There are no police here, only Ebubeagu and the army. People are scared of saying anything that might bring trouble to their families. For five years now, we've lived in fear.”

As of the time of this report, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, had yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
