The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, or FUNAAB, was established on 1 January 1988 by the Federal Government when four universities of technology, earlier merged in 1984, were demerged. This led to the creation of the first two universities of agriculture in Abeokuta. On the same date, Professor Nurudeen Olorun-Nimbe Adedipe was appointed the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the u

niversity. For many years the date which Professor Adedipe assumed duty was wrongly adopted as the foundation day. Following a revisit to the instrument setting up the university, a council decision at its 53rd statutory meeting in June 2010 reverted the foundation date to 1 January 1988 as prescribed by the law which established the university. Prior to the emergence of FUNAAB, the Federal Government had established Federal University of Technology, Abeokuta (FUTAB) in 1983. Then, in 1984, it was merged with the University of Lagos and had its name changed to the College of Science and Technology, Abeokuta (COSTAB), before the demerger of January, 1988. The university started off from the old campus of Abeokuta Grammar School, Isale-Igbein near the city centre. It completed its movement to its permanent site along Alabata Road in 1997[citation needed]. At the initial stage, five colleges were introduced in the university in October 1988 as follows:

College of Agricultural Management, Rural development and Communication Studies (COLAMRUCS), which name was later changed to COLAMRUD (College of Agriculture Management and Rural Development)

College of Animal Science and Livestock Production (COLANIM)

College of Environmental Resources Management (COLERM)

College of Natural Sciences (COLNAS)

College of Natural Science was reformed and redrafted into 2 colleges which are College of Physical Sciences (COLPHYS) and College of Biological Science (COLBIOS)

College of Plant Science and Crop Production (COLPLANT)

Two additional colleges, College of Engineering (COLENG) and College of Veterinary Medicine (COLVET) were introduced in March, 2002. During the 2008/2009 session, the College of Agricultural Management, Rural Development and Communication Studies was split into two, with two new colleges emerging as follows:

College of Food Science and Human Ecology (COLFHEC)

College of Agricultural Management and Rural Development (COLAMRUD)

The newest college is College of Management Sciences (COLEND)

The university is one of the three universities of agriculture in Nigeria, the other being in Makurdi (Benue State) and Umudike (Abia State). The university started at its mini-campus in Isale-Igbein in the heart of Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State. In December 1997 it moved to its permanent site on a 10,000-hectare campus which is located next to the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority on the Abeokuta-Ibadan road in the North Eastern end of the city, 15 km from Abeokuta City Centre.

FUNAAB Matriculates 6,356 Students, Records Largest Admission in 38 Years

Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has officially matriculated 6,356 students for the 2025/2026 academic session, the highest student intake recorded by the institution in nearly four decades of its establishment.

The Matriculation Ceremony, held on November 19, 2025, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, described the record admission as a major milestone in FUNAAB’s 38-year history. He expressed delight at the growing confidence of parents and prospective students in the University, while directing the new entrants to uphold discipline, decent dressing, a minimum of 70% class attendance, and strict adherence to the Institution’s rules. “FUNAAB remains a training ground for future leaders,” he said.

Prof. Kehinde reaffirmed the University’s zero tolerance for misconduct and emphasised that Student Union engagement on campus was guided strictly by dialogue and responsible leadership. He assured the students that their rights would be protected.

The ceremony marked a significant moment for FUNAAB as it continues to expand access to quality agricultural, entrepreneurial, scientific and technological education while nurturing the next generation of national and global leaders.

🚨💙 FUNAABSU X SPACE SESSION CLARIFIES NELFUND LOAN PROCESS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW 👇👇

The Students' Union (FUNAABSU) hosted a highly informative X Space session yesterday, October 24, 2025, addressing pressing questions and concerns regarding NELFUND loan applications and refunds.

The session, moderated by the PRO, Comrade AY Corporate, featured the number 1 student, Comrade LekkyJoe, who fielded questions from Funaabites, providing much-needed clarity on the NELFUND loan process.

According to the update, the More than half of the students who applied for refunds of 2023/24 session loan refund have received their refunds. Regarding the 2024/25 loan request, FUNAAB has uploaded the institution's fee and other necessary details for over 4,000 students who applied for the loan, and the university is awaiting approval from NELFUND.

The portal for the 2025/26 loan request was recently enabled by NELFUND on Thursday, October 24, 2025. Students who have previously applied for loans and are yet to receive approval are advised that applying for another loan may not be approved until the previous application is sorted.

For students seeking refunds, the process involves writing a letter to the Dean of Student Affairs through the Bursar, requesting a refund and attaching the required details.

It is essential to note that NELFUND is a separate entity from FUNAAB, and the university can only work with the information forwarded by NELFUND. As of today, only three institutions have received NELFUND disbursement for the 2024/25 loan: Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna.

FUNAABSU urges students to await NELFUND's full disbursement of the 2024/25 session loan as soon as possible. In the meantime, students are advised to explore alternative means to sort their school fees and seek refunds later from the school management.

The X Space session provided a vital platform for students to engage with their union representatives and gain a better understanding of the NELFUND loan process.
