CDHR Demands Justice Over Alleged Assault on Journalists in Ogun, Gives Security Agencies Seven-Day Ultimatum

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has strongly condemned the alleged assault and harassment of three journalists during an official enforcement exercise in Igbesa, Ogun State, describing the incident as a serious threat to press freedom and democratic governance.

The journalists identified as Taiwo Fabajo of OGTV, Bidemi Bello of Channels Television, and Gbenga Osinuga were reportedly attacked on June 3, 2026, by private security operatives attached to a Chinese company operating in the Ogunguandong area of the state while carrying out their professional duties.

In a statement jointly signed by the National President of CDHR, Comrade Yinka Folarin, and the National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Adewunmi Adesina, the organization said the attack represented a direct assault on the constitutional rights of citizens and the role of the media in promoting accountability.

The statement reads”The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) strongly condemns the brutal assault, harassment and intimidation of journalists namely Taiwo Fabajo of OGTV, Bidemi Bello of Channels Television and Gbenga Osinuga on 03/06/2026 while carrying out their legitimate professional duties during an official enforcement exercise in Igbesa, Ogun State.

“The reported attack by private security operatives attached to a Chinese company operating in the Ogunguandong area represents a grave violation of press freedom, the constitutional rights of citizens, and a direct assault on democratic values. Journalists play an indispensable role in promoting transparency, accountability and public enlightenment. Any attack on journalists is an attack on democracy itself.

“CDHR views this incident as a dangerous manifestation of impunity and lawlessness by private security personnel who apparently believe they are above the law and under the influence of some persons with questionable characters. The use of violence against media practitioners who were lawfully covering matters of public interest is unacceptable and must not be tolerated in any democratic society.

“Consequently, CDHR calls on the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately commence a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into this incident. We demand that all persons involved in the assault, including their sponsors, employers and collaborators, be identified, arrested and prosecuted within Seven (7) days from the date of this statement

“The Ogun State Government must also come clean on the suspicious circumstances that birthed the prevention of a routine enforcement operation leading to the unfortunate incident. The government owes the public a duty to investigate and disclose all facts relating to the allegations of suspicious under-remittance of Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) taxes and other statutory obligations reportedly connected with the company involved, suspicious multimillion deducted Pay as you Earn tax but unremmitted.

“Furthermore, the Ogun State Government must unravel and expose all individuals, whether within government circles or outside government, who may have aided, protected or benefited from any fraudulent practices associated with the company and robbing the state of the deserved revenue. The public deserves full accountability. Failure to transparently investigate these allegations will only deepen public suspicion and undermine confidence in governance and regulatory institutions.

“CDHR warns that any attempt to shield the perpetrators, suppress evidence, or frustrate investigations will be resisted through all lawful and democratic means available to civil society.

“Should the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services fail to bring the perpetrators to book within the stipulated Seven (7) days, CDHR, in collaboration with allied civil society organizations, labour activists, media stakeholders and democratic forces, shall be compelled to mobilize for peaceful mass actions, including picketing and occupation of the relevant security zone and offices, until justice is served and accountability is ensured.

“The safety of journalists is non-negotiable. No individual, corporation or security outfit has the authority to assault citizens with impunity. Nigeria remains a constitutional democracy governed by the rule of law, and all violators must be made to face the full weight of the law.

“CDHR stands in solidarity with the affected journalists, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), media practitioners across the country and all defenders of democratic freedoms”

FCT police arrest suspected k!dnappers in viral video wearing military camourflage and brandishing AK-47 rifles

The FCT police command have arrested suspected k!dnappers seen in a viral video openly brandishing AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and walkie-talkies, while dressed in military camouflage.

Confirming their arrest to newsmen, the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Sanusi, said immediately he received the viral video and pictures, he directed a detailed forensic analysis into the origin of the content and ordered the immediate arrest of the suspects.

Sanusi mentioned that following digital forensic analysis and actionable intelligence, he directed operatives of the FCT Police VCRU Sector 5 and personnel from Zuba Division, led by the DPO, CSP Ogu Caleb Ikechukwu, on a coordinated operation at Runji Village, Zuba, on May 25 at about 3:22am, where three suspects featured in the videos were arrested at their hideout.

He gave the names of the suspects as Umar Babangida, 25 years old; Adamu Yeti, 22 years old; and Yahaya Idris, 24 years old, all residents of Rijana, Kaduna State.

The police boss said investigations revealed that the suspects had previously been in possession of the AK-47 rifles, which were obtained from their gang leader identified only as “Esco” from Rijana, Kaduna State who is currently at large.

He mentioned that further investigations also led to the recovery of additional videos and photographs from the suspects’ mobile phones showing them dressed in military camouflage while brandishing AK-47 rifles and carrying walkie-talkies.

The suspects are currently in custody undergoing further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend Esco the gang leader and other members of the gang who are at large and recover the fi****ms.

FALSE SECURITY ALERT IN IFO: POLICE CONFIRM ROAD WORKERS, DISPEL CRIMINALS RUMOUR

The Ogun State Police Command has debunked a security scare in Ifo following the circulation of information alleging that a bus conveying suspected criminals was sighted along the Ibogun Road axis.

Acting on intelligence received on June 3, 2026, police surveillance and anti-robbery teams swiftly responded to the area and discovered that the bus, which had been intercepted by some youths, was conveying 21 labourers engaged by a construction company handling the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Ifo–Ibogun Road.

Further verification by the police confirmed that the workers were legitimately employed for the ongoing federal road project. The report linking them to criminal activities was found to be false and unfounded. Police officers subsequently assured the workers of their safety and escorted them to their work site, while members of the public were cautioned against spreading unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic and harassment of law-abiding citizens.

PRESS STATEMENT

AN ATTACK ON ONE JOURNALIST IS AN ATTACK ON THE ENTIRE MEDIA PROFESSION

The Freelance and Independent Broadcasters’ Association of Nigeria (FIBAN), Ogun State Chapter, joins the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, in strongly condemning the barbaric, reckless and unlawful assault on journalists carrying out their legitimate professional duties during an official enforcement exercise in the Ogun Guandong area of Igbesa, Ogun State.

The reported harassment and physical assault of Ogun State Television (OGTV) reporter, Mr. Taiwo Fabajo; Channels Television crew member, Mr. Bidemi Bello and journalist Mr. Gbenga Osinuga by private security operatives attached to a Chinese company is not only disgraceful but represents a direct attack on press freedom, the rule of law and the constitutional rights of media practitioners in Nigeria.

It is particularly disturbing that private security personnel, who have neither the authority nor legal mandate to obstruct journalists in the discharge of their duties, allegedly took the law into their own hands and descended on innocent professionals whose only offence was documenting an official government exercise. Such conduct is unacceptable, condemnable and must never be tolerated in any democratic society.

The media remains a critical pillar of democracy, serving as the eyes, ears and voice of the people. Any attempt to intimidate, harass, threaten or assault journalists is an attempt to suppress transparency, accountability and the public’s right to information. It is therefore alarming that individuals employed to provide security would exhibit such lawless behaviour and utter disregard for the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Ogun FIBAN demands an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation into this unfortunate incident. We call on the Nigeria Police Force and all relevant security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute every individual involved in this assault, irrespective of status, affiliation or employer.

We further urge the management of the company whose operatives allegedly perpetrated this act to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies and publicly distance itself from such irresponsible conduct. Silence or inaction in this matter would amount to complicity.

Let it be clearly stated that journalists are not enemies of the state, nor are they adversaries of legitimate businesses. They are professionals carrying out a constitutional responsibility in the interest of society. Any attack on them is an attack on democracy itself.

We stand firmly with our colleagues, Taiwo Fabajo, Bidemi Bello and Gbenga Osinuga, and assure them of our unwavering solidarity. We also stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council, in the pursuit of justice and accountability.

This matter must not be swept under the carpet. The perpetrators must be brought to book, and a clear message must be sent that Ogun State is not a safe haven for those who seek to intimidate or brutalize journalists.

Signed,
Chief Olalekan Shoyinka (Ayinla Egba),
Chairman,
Ogun FIBAN.

Police arrest suspect behind the AI-generated Tinubu voice note

The Nigerian Police Force has arrested Ifechukwu Dennis, the man identified as the originator of an AI-generated voice note that was widely circulated online as a leaked recording of President Bola Tinubu.

Presidential Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the arrest on Thursday in a post on his official X account.

“The IGP crack team has arrested Ifechukwu Dennis who originated the fake voice that he passed on to his gullible targets as President Tinubu’s voice,” he said.

The arrest closes a week-long controversy that began on May 27, 2026, when a video of social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, went viral.

In the clip, an AI-generated voice resembling Tinubu’s was heard making inflammatory statements — including that insecurity in the South-East was deliberate, that he had pressured Peter Obi to step down ahead of the 2023 election, and that he was indifferent to Nigerians’ suffering.

Investigations by multiple news organisations, however, established that VDM had not posted the doctored audio.

An unidentified individual had extracted footage from VDM’s original Instagram video and superimposed the AI-generated voice notes before recirculating the manipulated version online.

Despite this, the Presidency had initially called for VDM’s prosecution.

Onanuga had described the incident as “a clear case of egregious abuse of the social media platform,” drawing criticism after fact-checkers confirmed VDM’s original video contained none of the fabricated audio.

Further details on the circumstances of Dennis’s arrest and the charges he may face were not immediately available at the time of filing this report.
