Giving up; an unwilfull choice.
Theory: Ecclesiastes 7:7 Surely, oppression makes a wise man mad.
Lemma: Depression is a function of oppression ( excruciating pains).
There is a state that every human being can be such that he/ she continuously process, filters, stimulates the psychological confirmation of his/ her own pre and already existing 'self facts'.
If you will agree with me that our brains are extremely complex and complicated such that it is wired to reinforce and regulate our mental lives. However, that 'state' I tried to describe initially is some sort of the subconscious which is a transition or a boarder state.
Conditions of life at times take over the mental strength of humans. Hence he/she is subjected to taking orders spontaneously from the subconscious and the result of these actions may be irrevocable eg su***de, murder, etc. Things he/she ordinarily wouldn't even think of.
On a religious sentiment, I will say that to every occurrence/ action, there is a spiritual undertone in other words, things don't just happen, they're already predetermined by forces far beyond any human reasoning.
Therefore, there is a need for a deeper Force to help process and control the effects of those self facts(such as loss of loved ones, jobs, debts, divorce, homelessness, court cases, scandals, etc) on humans as we occasionally fall into the 'state'. This deeper force is a determinant if you must get back stronger or give up.
I will yet encourage you back to that Ancient Force, the Almighty God, the present help in times of need. Trust His deeds and decisions per time. Let us hold on still.
We shall overcome these hard times.
