To Stay Spiritually Awake in a Distracted World, a Believer Must:
Obey God’s Instructions in Order to Win the Race
The Christian journey is not a journey of doing whatever feels right or following whatever the world says is acceptable. It is a journey of obedience, discipline, faith, and continual dependence on God.
Just as an athlete cannot ignore the rules and still expect to receive the prize, a believer cannot deliberately live contrary to God’s Word and expect to remain spiritually strong.
“And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.”
— 2 Timothy 2:5
God has given us instructions for how to live, how to relate with others, how to guard our hearts, how to respond to temptation, and how to remain spiritually alert.
So, what are the rules?
1. Walk in Love and Imitate Christ — Ephesians 5:1–2
A spiritually awake believer must learn to walk in love.
Our love should not be based only on how people treat us. Christ loved us even when we did not deserve it, and He gave Himself for us. Therefore, we are called to imitate Him.
Walking in love means choosing forgiveness over bitterness, kindness over cruelty, humility over pride, and sacrifice over selfishness.
You cannot claim to be spiritually awake while deliberately living in hatred, unforgiveness, bitterness, and constant strife.
2. Be Continually Filled With the Spirit — Ephesians 5:18
The Bible says:
“And be not drunk with w**e, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.”
Notice that the instruction is to be filled. This speaks of a continual dependence on the Holy Spirit.
We cannot remain spiritually alert by yesterday’s encounter with God. Yesterday’s prayer cannot replace today’s fellowship. Yesterday’s revelation cannot replace today’s obedience.
Every day, we need the help of the Holy Spirit to make right decisions, resist temptation, understand God’s Word, control our attitudes, and remain sensitive to God’s voice.
A spiritually awake believer does not try to live the Christian life in human strength. He depends on the Holy Spirit.
3. Stay Watchful and Prepared — Matthew 25:13
Jesus said:
“Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.”
One of the greatest dangers of the Christian life is becoming spiritually careless.
The five foolish virgins in Matthew 25 were not unaware that the bridegroom was coming. Their problem was that they were not prepared when he arrived.
Being spiritually awake means refusing to live carelessly.
We must watch what we allow into our hearts. We must watch our relationships, our conversations, our priorities, our habits, and the things that gradually pull our attention away from God.
A distracted believer may not abandon God overnight. Sometimes the drift happens gradually; one compromise, one neglected prayer, one ignored conviction, one unnecessary distraction at a time.
4. Walk in the Spirit and Refuse the Works of the Flesh — Galatians 5:16
Here's another instruction:
“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
There will always be temptations, distractions, wrong desires, anger, pride, lust, jealousy, selfish ambition, and other things that can weaken our spiritual sensitivity.
But God has not left us powerless.
We are called to walk in the Spirit.
Walking in the Spirit means allowing the Holy Spirit to influence our thoughts, decisions, attitudes, desires, and actions.
It means asking, “What does God want?” rather than simply asking, “What do I want?”
The more we yield ourselves to the Spirit, the less control the desires of the flesh should have over our lives.
Spiritual Alertness Does Not Happen by Accident
Our world is filled with distractions. There is always something demanding our attention; social media, entertainment, money, relationships, work, ambitions, opinions, and the pressures of everyday life.
None of these things is necessarily wrong in itself. The danger is when they become so important that God is pushed to the background.
That is why staying spiritually awake requires intentionality.
We must deliberately choose prayer.
We must deliberately study the Word.
We must deliberately obey God.
We must deliberately walk in love.
We must deliberately stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
We must deliberately guard our hearts.
You don't accidentally become spiritually strong, and you don't accidentally remain spiritually awake.
The same way an athlete trains consistently to finish a race, a believer must continually discipline himself to follow Christ.
The goal is not simply to start well. The goal is to finish well.
Obey the Word.
Walk in the Spirit.
Stay watchful.
Keep your heart right.
Finish well.
