Israeli PM slams violence, religious persecution in Nigeria

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned what he described as a Christian genocide in Nigeria, calling for an immediate end to violence and displacement targeting Christians in the country.

In a Christmas video message delivered on Wednesday, Netanyahu said attacks against Christians or adherents of any religion were unacceptable and must not be tolerated.

He specifically referenced what he called militant attacks against Christians in Nigeria, urging that they come to an end without delay.

“The persecution of Christians or members of any religion cannot and must not be tolerated. And the displacement and attacks against Christians in Nigeria, that too must end. And it must end now,” he said.

So This Happened (EP 258)

Netanyahu used the address to highlight Israel as, in his words, the only country in the Middle East where Christians can freely practise their faith and celebrate religious traditions without fear.

He contrasted Israel’s approach with what he described as widespread intimidation and persecution of Christian communities in other parts of the region.

“Israel is the only country in the Middle East where Christians can practise their faith with full rights and in total freedom, where Christian pilgrims are embraced with open arms and are so deeply appreciated, where Christians can celebrate their traditions proudly and openly do so without any fear,” Netanyahu said.

According to him, Israel’s Christian population continues to grow, while Christian communities in several Middle Eastern countries have declined due to discrimination and oppression. He cited Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, and areas under the Palestinian Authority as examples.

“The birthplace of Jesus, Bethlehem, used to have an 80 per cent Christian population. That’s when we were there. When we left and gave it to the Palestinian Authority, it has since dwindled from 80 per cent to 20 per cent,” he said.

Netanyahu further compared the treatment of Christian symbols, stating that Jerusalem’s municipal authorities distribute Christmas trees annually, while a Christmas tree was recently burned in Jenin.

“In Jerusalem, the city municipality every year officially distributes Christmas trees every year. It’s been doing so for two decades. By contrast, a few days ago, in the Palestinian town of Jenin, Palestinians burnt a Christmas tree in the Holy Redeemer Church,” he said.

“That’s the difference. Israel stands up for Christians across the region, wherever they face widespread intimidation and persecution,” he added.

Concluding his message, Netanyahu extended seasonal greetings to Christians worldwide.

The comments come weeks after United States President Donald Trump accused the Federal Government of failing to stop the killing of Christians in the country. In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump warned that the US could halt all aid to Nigeria and consider military action if the attacks continued.

Deploy Akinyemi, Kingibe, Anyaoku to defend Nigeria’s image before US, Sen. Ndume Tells FG

Ali Ndume, senator representing Borno central, has called on the federal government to engage seasoned diplomats to defend Nigeria’s image following President Donald Trump’s designation as a “country of particular concern.”

Trump had, in a post shared on his Truth Social account and the White House’s X handle, on Friday, claimed that Christians were being massacred in Nigeria, describing the situation as a genocide.

In a statement on Saturday, Ndume said diplomats should be engaged to help defend Nigeria’s image on the global stage.

“Before things get out of hand, Nigeria should engage seasoned diplomats like Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, Babagana Kingibe, Professor Sulu Gambari, and Amina Mohammed in the United Nations,” he said.

“They should also engage the American embassy in Nigeria because they have the facts.

“We can change the narrative by ensuring that we aren’t tagged ‘country of particular concern,’ but ‘country of special concern,’ so that they can give us all the support, including arms and ammunition, to effectively contain terrorists.

Taraba University Student Apologizes to Catholic Diocese Over Controversial Nun Costume

A student of Taraba State University, Endurance Achikare Igbagri, has issued a public apology to the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo and the wider Christian community over a controversial costume she wore during the institution’s recent Costume Day celebration.

Photos and videos circulating on social media showed some students, including Ms. Igbagri, dressed in outfits resembling those of Catholic nuns and priests, a move many described as offensive and disrespectful to the Church.

In a formal apology letter addressed to the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo, Catholic clergy and faithful, as well as the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the student expressed deep remorse, describing her actions as “thoughtless, disrespectful, and completely unacceptable.”

She further explained that the act was done out of ignorance and not intended to mock or insult the Church or its doctrines.

The university has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
