Nigerian Senate Takes a Stand on Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa 🇳🇬🤝
The Nigerian Senate has firmly rejected calls to nationalise South African businesses like MTN and DStv following the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa.
Instead, our lawmakers are pushing for stronger diplomatic solutions:
• Demand written assurances for the safety of Nigerians
• Call for the arrest and prosecution of attackers
• Strengthen support for affected citizens
• Partner with the African Union to end xenophobic violence
Senator Adams Oshiomhole made a strong point during the debate:
“We cannot allow Nigerians to suffer such losses and then use Nigerian taxpayers’ money to compensate them while South African businesses continue to make profits here.
However, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin called for caution, directing the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs to submit a detailed report within two weeks before any further steps.
The Senate remains committed to protecting Nigerians through proper diplomatic channels and justice.
