Niger State Government Introduces Skills Acquisition in Secondary Schools

The Niger State Government has announced the introduction of skills acquisition programs in Junior and Secondary Schools across the state.

Dr. Hadiza Muhammad, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, revealed this during a post-State Executive Council press briefing held at the Government House, Minna.

According to Dr. Muhammad, the skills acquisition sessions will take place every Friday, starting from the next academic term. This initiative aims to equip students with practical skills essential for their future, recognizing that not all will pursue traditional white-collar careers.

Dr. Muhammad emphasized the importance of starting skill development early, stating, "Monday to Thursday are for academic work, we are going to use Friday as a skills acquisition day because we need to catch this child young and they will be trained in their preferred skills."

Additionally, the Commissioner outlined several measures aimed at revitalizing the education sector, particularly in Basic and Senior Education, in alignment with the Federal government's education policy.

These measures include restructuring the education system to commence from Early Child Care Development Education (ECCDE) at age three, replacing direct admission into Primary one. Students will progress from ECCDE to Nursery, Primary, and then Junior Secondary School (JSS) 1 to 3. After completing JSS 3, students will receive a Basic School Leaving Certificate, replacing the Primary School Certificate previously awarded.

Furthermore, the Ministry plans to introduce a one-year special class as a transition for students before moving them to the appropriate classes. Advocacy efforts will also be intensified to raise awareness about these changes.

To enhance teaching quality, the Ministry will ensure that only National Certificate of Education (NCE) holders teach at the Basic Education level, with a minimum requirement of

Farmer Governor Umar Bago Addresses Recent Protest, Links It to Food Looters in Minna

In a recent briefing at the Government House, Minna, Farmer Governor Mohammed Umar Bago attributed the recent protest in Niger State to hoodlums blocking a major road with the intention of looting food items from trucks en route to Abuja from the Southern part of the country.

After extensive security meetings with stakeholders, Governor Bago revealed that the protesters had an organized network to communicate and coordinate their actions upon spotting trucks carrying food items.

Highlighting that the current challenges extend beyond Niger State, Governor Bago also linked the surge in food prices to speculators purchasing items in villages. In response, he issued an executive order banning large purchases of food items from trucks, warning of prosecution and truck confiscation for violators, with the food items to be distributed to the people.

Governor Bago informed that the Federal Government has been briefed on the incident, with assurances of intervention. He stated, "I have called the Vice President and the National Security Adviser. They have shown interest in the matter. Security agents have made lots of arrests, more would be made, and they would be prosecuted."

He emphasized ongoing discussions with relevant stakeholders on price stability and alerted the Transport Unions to stay informed and communicate with their members about the optimal travel times. The Farmer Governor affirmed the government's commitment to collaborate with Local Government Chairmen, traditional institutions, and security agencies to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
