Every sovereign state exists for one fundamental purpose: to provide order, security, and the conditions necessary for citizens to pursue productive lives. While governments perform many functions—economic management, infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and diplomacy—none is more foundational than the protection of life and property.
When security weakens, every other achievement becomes vulnerable.
Nigeria's security challenges are often discussed as isolated problems: terrorism in one region, banditry in another, kidnapping along major highways, communal conflicts in rural communities, and criminal violence in urban centers. Yet, viewed collectively, these incidents point to a deeper concern that goes beyond crime itself.
They raise questions about the strength and resilience of the Nigerian state.
A fragile state is not necessarily one that has collapsed.
