How Northern Nigeria’s Groundnut Economy Laid the Foundation for Nigeria’s Oil Age
In the middle of the 20th century, Northern Nigeria was known for its endless groundnut farms spread across the Sahel. Thousands of small-scale farmers cultivated the crop, while cities such as Kano and Katsina became globally recognized for their massive groundnut pyramids. These towering structures were more than storage sites—they stood as symbols of prosperity, productivity, and a region that sustained Nigeria’s economy long before oil became dominant.
Before crude oil reshaped the nation’s fortunes, agriculture was Nigeria’s main economic pillar. During the 1950s and early 1960s, farming accounted for a large portion of the country’s GDP, employed most of the population, and generated the bulk of foreign exchange earnings. Northern Nigeria played a leading role in this success. The Northern Nigeria Marketing Board was created to regulate and support the export of key crops such as groundnuts and cotton. Through this system, groundnut purchases increased significantly, rising from about 178,000 tonnes in 1949 to nearly 787,000 tonnes by 1964.
The income generated from groundnut exports was channeled into major development projects across the region, including the establishment of universities, textile factories, and other public infrastructure. Because Nigeria operated under a federal system, a share of this agricultural revenue also went to the central government. These funds supported nationwide development and indirectly contributed to initiatives that later enabled oil exploration and production in southern Nigeria.
With the discovery of crude oil in the Niger Delta, Nigeria’s economic priorities shifted. By the 1970s, oil revenues had overtaken agriculture as the main source of national income. As a result, institutions like the marketing boards lost their prominence, and the historical contributions of northern agriculture were often overlooked in the new oil-driven economy.
