BENUE INSECURITY: AGATU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA IMPOSES BAN ON FOREST LOGGING.
By Jude Oche, Makurdi
In furtherance to address the escalating security concerns in Agatu West, the Agatu Local Government Council has imposed an immediate and comprehensive ban on all forest logging activities in Agatu West, citing the alarming rate of security in the area.
The decision, which takes effect immediately, is aimed at mitigating the security risks associated with unregulated logging and preserving the environment for future generations.
In a press statement released on Sunday by the executive chairman of Agatu Local Government, Hon. James Melvin Ejeh, the ban is a proactive measure designed to tackle the growing insecurity in the area. "We've been monitoring the situation closely, and it's clear that the incessant logging has not only led to severe environmental degradation but has also created avenues for criminal elements to operate with impunity," he said.
Hon. Ejeh emphasized that the council can no longer afford to sit idly by while the environment and security are threatened by the activities of unscrupulous loggers. "We've seen the devastating impact of unregulated logging on our communities, and it's time for us to take decisive action to protect our people and our environment," he stressed.
The chairman warned that anyone found engaging in logging activities without proper authorization from the Local Government Administration will face the full weight of the law. "All logging activities henceforth require explicit clearance from myself, and we will not hesitate to take stern measures against anyone who flouts this directive," he emphasized. "We're not playing games with this; the security and well-being of our people are paramount."
Hon. Ejeh urged residents to comply with the directive and report any logging activities to the council authorities. "We need the collective efforts of all stakeholders to make this work," he said. "We urge everyone to join hands with us to tackle this menace and build a safer, more secure environment for all. Together, we can overcome the security challenges that have beset our area and build a more prosperous and secure future for ourselves and future generations."
The chairman reiterated the council's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents. "We're not just talking about security; we're talking about the future of our children and the prosperity of our communities," he said. "We owe it to ourselves and to future generations to protect our environment and our natural resources. This ban is a crucial step in that direction."
Hon. Ejeh assured that the council will work tirelessly to address the security challenges facing the area and implement measures that promote peace and stability. "We'll continue to engage with all stakeholders, including security agencies, community leaders, and residents, to ensure that our efforts are effective and sustainable," the chairman stated.
