GOVERNOR ALIA APPROVES CRITICAL ROAD PROJECTS AS AGATU LGC CHAIRMAN CONDEMNS GRUESOME MURDER OF THREE YOUTHS IN EGWUMA COMMUNITY

Saturday, August 23, 2025

The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Hon. (Amb) James Melvin Ejeh, has expressed profound sorrow and outrage over the tragic murder of three innocent young men; Sunday Ngbede, Ochokpefu Ochowechi, and Yusufu Onuminya in Egwuma community, Agatu West, by suspected terrorists on Friday night, August 22, 2025. The heinous attack, which occurred while the victims were attending a burial ceremony, has disrupted nine months of relative peace and plunged the local government into mourning.

Hon. Ejeh condemned the senseless killings in the strongest possible terms, describing the act as a calculated attempt to destabilise the peace-loving people of Agatu. “This barbaric act is not just an attack on innocent lives; it is a deliberate and provocative strategy aimed at annihilating the law-abiding citizens of Agatu,” he stated.

While condemning the attack, Hon. Ejeh commended the swift and coordinated response of security agencies, particularly Captain Christopher Okwudiri, Commander of the Army Battalion in Agatu, and CSP Dennis Asawa, Divisional Police Officer and other security agencies in the area. He acknowledged their synergy and professionalism, which he said played a significant role in preventing further casualties during the attack.

“I must commend the exceptional efforts of our security forces, including Captain Christopher of Operation Whirl Stroke and CSP Dennis Asawa of the Nigeria Police Force. Despite the challenging terrain, their prompt response to distress calls was instrumental in averting what could have been an even greater tragedy. Without their intervention, the loss of lives could have escalated significantly,” Hon. Ejeh remarked.

The Chairman expressed his gratitude to Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia for his immediate approval of critical road projects in the area, including the Engila-Ajomachi Road and the Ugba-ogwumogbo Road. He emphasized that these infrastructural developments will significantly enhance the mobility of security operatives, enabling them to respond more effectively to emergencies and curbing the nefarious activities of terrorist herders in the region

“Governor Alia’s prompt approval for the commencement of work on these road networks is a bold and commendable step in the fight against insecurity. These roads, which have long posed challenges to security agencies, will not only improve accessibility but also shorten response times during emergencies. This infrastructural support is vital in our collective effort to curb the activities of terrorist herders and restore lasting peace to our communities,” Hon. Ejeh stated.

Additionally, Hon. Ejeh extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Egwuma community. “My heart goes out to the families of the victims; Sunday Ngbede, Ochokpefu Ochowechi, and Yusufu Onuminya, and the Egwuama community at large. This is a heartbreaking loss for all of us. I share in your grief and assure you that we will not rest until justice is served. The lives of these young men will not be lost in vain,” he said.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare and safety of Agatu residents, Hon. Ejeh pledged to intensify efforts to secure the region and work closely with security agencies to prevent future occurrences of such attacks. He also called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.

"The safety and well-being of our people remain my top priority. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that Agatu remains a safe and peaceful place for all its residents. However, I urge everyone to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting suspicious movements or activities to the relevant authorities. Together, we will safeguard our communities and defend our peace,” Hon. Ejeh emphasized.

NCFRMI Pledges Immediate Relief and Long-Term Support for Agatu IDPs Amid Advocacy by Hon. Ejeh

Thursday, August 21, 2025

The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has committed to providing immediate humanitarian assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

This intervention will include food supplies, non-food items (NFIs), livelihood kits, seasonal farming assistance, and plans for sustainable solutions to help rebuild the devastated communities.

The Honourable Federal Commissioner of the NCFRMI, Hon. Tijani Aliyu Ahmed, made this pledge during a meeting with a delegation of Agatu stakeholders at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The delegation, led by the Executive Chairman of the Agatu Local Government Council, Hon. (Amb) James Melvin Ejeh, included representatives from the Agatu Traditional Council, headed by Chief Jerry Ochola; the Agatu West Elders Forum, led by Col. Isah Odagbali (retd.); and the Agatu West Peace and Unity Forum, represented by Ebi Lucky.

Hon. Ejeh presented a heartfelt appeal to the Commission, submitting both hard and soft copies of pictorial evidence showcasing the destruction in Agatu. “What we found in Agatu was heartbreaking. Fifteen of our communities—Ikpele 1, Ikpele 2, Egwuma, Iwarri, Ogwumogbo, Okpokpolo, Akele, Okwutanobe, Ejima, Olegadapa, Olamachi, Ogbai London, Olegankolo, Olegadaechono, and others—were completely sacked byminals we can only describe as bandits. Families have been displaced, homes and schools burned down, hospitals and markets reduced to ashes, leaving thousands homeless in their land,” he stated.

He emphasised the dire humanitarian situation in the area, noting that while peace has been restored to some extent, the displaced population still faces significant challenges. “Although relative centres have been restored, our displaced people cannot return home because there is nothing left for them to come back to. There are no schools for their children, no healthcare centres for the sick, no homes, and no markets. The ruins of their communities make it impossible for them to rebuild their lives without external intervention,” he explained.

The Chairman commended the Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, for his unwavering support in addressing insecurity and promoting peace in Agatu. “We sincerely appreciate the Governor for his tireless efforts to tackle insecurity in Benue and for his continued support for peace in Agatu. His leadership has been instrumental in mobilising resources and guiding security responses that have saved countless lives,” Hon. Ejeh said.

He also acknowledged the critical role played by security agencies in restoring peace to the area. “The professionalism and dedication of our security agencies, including Operation Whirl Stroke, the police, the DSS, civil defence, and local vigilante groups, have ensured that Agatu has enjoyed peace for over eight months, with no major herder/farmer clashes,” he noted.

In response to the appeal, Hon. Tijani Aliyu Ahmed assured the delegation of NCFRMI’s commitment to providing both immediate and long-term support.

“The plight of the people of Agatu is deeply concerning. As a Commission, we are mandated to ensure that no displaced person is left behind. Our intervention will focus on providing immediate relief through food supplies, NFIs, and livelihood kits while also working toward durable solutions to rebuild the communities and restore dignity to the displaced,” Hon. Tijani stated.

The Honourable Commissioner emphasised the importance of fostering peace and coexistence in resolving conflicts. “In all conflicts, there must come a time to reach an understanding and address the underlying issues. Now is the time for Agatu. I urge all stakeholders to work toward living together in peace. Achieving peace is possible when those who have had disagreements in the past choose to forget the negative events and move forward,” Hon. Tijani added.

He also highlighted the Federal Government’s recent initiative to modernise the broader farmers-herders crisis through the formation of the Presidential Committee on Livestock Reforms.

“This committee is tasked with creating long-term solutions to the conflict while modernising the livestock industry and fostering peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders. This is an important step toward achieving sustainable peace in affected areas,” he emphasised.

Hon. Ejeh expressed optimism about the intervention and the potential for rebuilding Agatu’s communities. “We believe in this government’s commitment to addressing the plight of internally displaced persons. With the support of the NCFRMI, we are confident that the people of Agatu will not be forgotten. This intervention will bring hope to thousands of displaced persons and help them rebuild their lives,” he concluded.

The NCFRMI is expected to commence its intervention immediately, with plans for a comprehensive needs assessment to ensure tailored support for the affected communities.

BENUE: ADASU UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL TO ESTABLISH ANNEXE IN AGATU LGA
....Promises Grassroots Healthcare Transformation As Hon. Ejeh Advocates For Lifesaving Healthcare Access In The Area.

The Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University Teaching Hospital Makurdi, formerly known as Benue State University Teaching Hospital Makurdi, is set to establish an annex in Agatu Local Government Area (LGA), bringing succor to the people of the region who have long suffered in accessing quality and affordable healthcare services.

This announcement was made on Thursday, August 14, 2025, by the hospital’s Managing Director, Dr. Stephen Terungwa Stephen Hwande, during a meeting with a delegation from Agatu LGA led by the council chairman, Hon. James Melvin Ejeh. Dr. Hwande described the proposal for the annexe as “a must-granted and God-ordained decision” to unite Benue State through improved healthcare access.

In his remarks, Dr. Hwande emphasized the significance of the visit, noting the symbolic unity it represents— Hon. Ejeh hailing from Benue South and himself from Benue North-West. "This annexe is not just about healthcare; it is about bridging divides and bringing critical services closer to underserved communities," Dr. Hwande stated. He praised Hon. Ejeh, as the first chairman from Benue South, to champion such a unifying initiative, asserting that the chairman’s efforts have already written his name in gold.

To ensure swift implementation, Dr. Hwande immediately announced the hospital’s Director of Finance, Dr. Michael Abah, FCA, is chairman of the annexe establishment committee.

Earlier, Hon. Ejeh, in his appeal for the annexe, highlighted the dire healthcare challenges faced by the people of Agatu LGA for decades. "Our people have suffered from a lack of access to quality and affordable healthcare. We have lost countless lives promising individuals, pregnant women, and children simply because a healthcare facility was not within reach," he lamented.

He passionately argued that the establishment of the annexe would be a lifesaving intervention in the region, capable of reducing maternal and child mortality rates, improving emergency response, and providing affordable care to grassroots communities. Hon. Ejeh also expressed his admiration for the transformation witnessed at the teaching hospital under Dr. Hwande’s leadership, commending Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia for appointing such a visionary leader. "Dr. Hwande has truly elevated the hospital to world-class standards in a remarkably short time. His leadership gives us hope for what is possible," Ejeh said.

The deputy ALGON chairman in Benue State further stated that the proposed annexe extends far beyond healthcare delivery. "This annex promises job creation for local healthcare workers, improved health literacy in rural communities, and reduced financial burdens for families who currently travel long distances for treatment in urban centres. The annexe will also enhance the hospital's capacity for medical research and training, fostering the development of healthcare professionals from Benue South," the Agatu council chairman stated. Hon. Ejeh assured that efforts would be made to liaise with ALGON in Benue to ensure the annexe is fully domesticated within the framework of grassroots healthcare delivery.

Prominent figures in the delegation, including Hon. Commissioner-designate Dr.mrs Adamu Margaret Ijaguwa and other community leaders, such as the former chairman of the council, Mohammed Audu, majority leader of Agatu Local Government Council, Hon. Engr. Enogela Jibrin, and the deputy leader, Hon. Jibril Fatima, among others, pledged their commitment to supporting the project.

The annexe, once completed, will stand as a beacon of hope and a practical solution to longstanding healthcare challenges in Agatu LGA.

NEWLY RECRUITED SUBEB TEACHERS PAY COURTESY VISIT TO HON. ABO, EXPRESS GRATITUDE TO GOVERNOR ALIA

In a heartwarming display of appreciation, a delegation of newly recruited teachers of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) from Ukum Local Government Area paid a courtesy visit to the Benue State Honourable Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, Hon. Abo Matthew , at his Zaki Biam residence on Sunday. The teachers, who were recently recruited through a merit-based process, expressed their unbridled joy and gratitude to the Governor of Benue State, His Excellency, Rev. Fr. The group of teachers, led by Mr. Raymond Nguean, conveyed their sincere appreciation to Governor Alia for creating an enabling environment that allowed them to demonstrate their skills and qualifications, ultimately leading to their recruitment.

They praised Governor Alia's administration for its commitment to transparency and fairness in the recruitment process, which has earned widespread acclaim across the State.

BENUE COMMISSIONER HAILS GOV. ALIA'S COMMITMENT TO QUALITY INFRASTRUCTURE, ACCOUNTABILITY

By Ayihe Festus Sulega

Benue State Commissioner for Information Culture and Tourism, Hon. Abo Matthew, has lauded Gov. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia for his unwavering commitment to quality infrastructure, financial transparency, and the empowerment of local contractors.

Speaking with some Media representatives recently at his office in Makurdi, Hon. Abo emphasized the administration’s deliberate strategy to match project scope with contractor capacity, particularly when engaging indigenous firms.

“It is a disservice to assign an underpass project to a two-star contractor,” he said. “Just like a child must crawl before they walk and then run, we are gradually building the capacity of local contractors by assigning them smaller projects initially.”

He noted that several indigenous firms have progressed from minor assignments to executing more complex jobs such as short-span bridges and roads extending up to 20–30 kilometers.

Abo, however, explained that while some major infrastructural projects are still awarded to experienced expatriate firms due to technical demands, most of the materials and labour used such as cement, sand, bitumen, and iron rods, are sourced locally.

“This ensures that funds circulate within our local economy, creating jobs and supporting small businesses,” he stated.

The commissioner stressed that the Alia administration remains firmly committed to empowering indigenous contractors while maintaining high standards.

“We are making steady progress. Every year, we allocate good amount of money specifically for inter-local government roads, in addition to other major road projects that link various LGAs.”

He also highlighted a recent inspection tour by senior editors and veteran journalists who visited multiple project sites across the state during the two years administration anniversary of Gov. Alia.

According to Abo, the visitors were highly impressed by both the quality of infrastructure and Benue State’s consistency in honouring payment commitments.

“They were amazed that once a project certificate is verified in Benue, Governor Alia pays almost 100%, no delays, no excuses. I say with confidence, that Benue State despite the insecurity confronting her is still doing very well.

He attributed this financial discipline to the governor’s leadership style, which emphasizes results over media visibility.

Abo added that the governor’s hands-on leadership, backed by a proactive State Executive Council, has ensured that many of the administration’s achievements speak for themselves, even without elaborate commissioning ceremonies.

“There’s so much going on that we haven’t even publicized. But when you come to Benue, the projects speak for themselves.”

He urged citizens and stakeholders to continue supporting the administration, noting that Governor Alia is laying a foundation for inclusive growth and sustainability.

He highlighted key developmental gains across multiple sectors, including roads, education, housing, and healthcare. He noted that over 150 primary health centers have been tiped for revamping, with secondary and tertiary institutions also undergoing upgrades.

“We are procuring advanced medical machines and more to elevate healthcare delivery across the state.”

While refraining from naming specific contractors to avoid undue promotion, Mr. Abo acknowledged the vital roles played by both local and international firms in the state’s ongoing transformation.

“Their work speaks volumes, and we deeply appreciate the professionalism they bring.”

He concluded by reaffirming the administration’s focus on impactful governance, transparency, and long-term development, saying, “Governor Alia remains committed to leaving a legacy of inclusive growth, good governance, and accountable service delivery.”

BENUE HUMANITARIAN CRISIS: FG URGED TO SUPPORT AGATU COMMUNITY AS LGC CHAIRMAN LAUDS GOV. ALIA'S SECURITY EFFORTS.

The Agatu Local Government Council has called on the Federal Government to provide urgent support to the Agatu community, which has been ravaged by attacks from suspected Fulani herdsmen.

This appeal follows a thorough 8-hour assessment of public structures in 15 settlements of Usha, Ogwule Kaduna, and Ogwule Ogbaulu ward in Agatu West, Agatu local government council which aims to inform the rehabilitation of critical infrastructure and facilitate the safe return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their homes.

During a comprehensive routine security assessment tour on Wednesday, the Chairman of Agatu Local Government Council, Hon.(Amb) James Melvin Ejeh, underscored the paramount importance of rehabilitation efforts in facilitating the return of IDPs and fostering the overall development of the area.

"We are working assiduously to ensure that our people have unfettered access to fundamental infrastructure, including roads, schools, hospitals, markets, and chief palaces, which are indispensable for their safe and dignified return," Hon. Ejeh stated.

The assessment witnessed the firsthand return of displaced persons to their communities, with residents resuming farm activities in settlements like Iwarri, London, Ikpele 2, and Egwuma.

However, other communities, such as Ejima 1 and 2, Okpokpolo, Ogwumogbo, Ajomanchi, Ogbai, and Akele, remain displaced due to the lack of basic infrastructure.

Hon. Ejeh expressed profound appreciation to Governor Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia for his unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety and security of the people of Agatu Local Government Council.

He emphasized that the populace requires fundamental infrastructure to facilitate their safe and dignified return.

The chairman thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support but urged the federal government to do more to address the plight of Agatu people.

"The federal government needs to make deliberate efforts to address the plight of Agatu people. We need support in rebuilding our infrastructure, providing more security formations, and creating an enabling environment for our people to return and rebuild their lives," Hon. Ejeh appealed.

Hon. Ejeh further commended the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, the Service Chiefs, and security operatives for maintaining peace in the local government area and expressed confidence that his administration would secure the safe return of IDPs.

"We are committed to ensuring that our people are safe and secure. We will work with security agencies to create an enabling environment for our people to return and rebuild their lives," Hon. Ejeh said.

Through a concerted effort to rehabilitate damaged infrastructure and provide vital amenities, the Agatu Local Government Council is committed to rejuvenating affected communities and laying the groundwork for enduring development.

In this regard, the federal government's backing will play a vital role in mitigating the humanitarian crisis in Agatu, allowing residents to rebuild their lives with dignity and security.
