The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned nine persons over their alleged involvement in the recent killings in Benue and Plateau States.

The suspects were brought before a Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday.

The DSS also charged a suspected gunrunner with unlawful possession of seven M16 rifles.
Two of the accused, Haruna Adamu and Muhammad Abdullahi, both from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, are facing a four-count charge relating to the killings in Abinsi and Yelewata, Guma LGA of Benue.

They were alleged to have committed the offence alongside others still at large on June 13.

Two others, Terkende Ashuwa and Amos Alede, both from Guma LGA of Benue, were charged on three counts for alleged reprisal attacks against initial suspects, including the destruction of property which resulted in the loss of 12 cattle in Ukpam village.

In a separate charge, Halima Haliru Umar, 32, from Faskari LGA of Katsina State, was accused of concealing information about Alhaji Sani, a suspected gunrunner, bandit and kidnapper.

The DSS also filed a six-count charge against Silas Iduh Oloche from Agatu LGA in Benue for unlawful possession of 18 fi****ms, including grenades, without licence, contrary to Section 27 of the Fi****ms Act.

Similarly, two Plateau residents, Nanbol Tali, 75, and Timnan Manjo, were arraigned on a four-count charge for allegedly buying and selling two locally fabricated AK-47 rifles for N3 million.

Another suspect, Danjuma Antu of Jos North LGA, Plateau, was arraigned on a five-count charge of unlawful possession of two locally fabricated pistols and fi****ms capable of discharging 9mm calibre ammunition.

It will be recalled that gunmen have mounted a string of deadly attacks in Benue and Plateau in recent months, killing hundreds of residents and displacing thousands.

On June 13, gunmen attacked Yelewata and Daudu communities in Guma LGA, Benue, killing more than 200 people, including farmers and internally displaced persons (IDPs).

On June 24, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, announced the arrest of 28 suspects linked to the Yelewata attack.

The arraignments demonstrate the agency’s proactive approach to promoting accountability and ensuring that suspects are brought before the court without undue delay.

The swift action and thorough investigation of these cases mark a new era for the DSS, reflecting institutional integrity and an unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law,”the sources stated.

The Nigerian Army has recorded remarkable operational successes between 27 and 28 August 2025, neutralizing terrorists, arresting criminal suspects, rescuing kidnapped victims, and recovering arms, ammunition, and other contraband across multiple theatres of operation. These achievements highlight the Army’s sustained resolve to rid the nation of insecurity and restore peace to affected communities.

In the North East, troops of 151 Task Force Battalion intercepted a truck loaded with 142 bags of NPK fertilizer diverted from its approved destination, while 21 Brigade troops also seized another truck with 100 bags of fertilizer concealed among food items. Both cases, suspected to be supplies meant for terrorists, are under investigation. Similarly, troops of 112 Battalion discovered and safely detonated two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along the Mafa–Ajiri road in Borno State, averting potential casualties.

In the North West, gallant troops of 8 Division Garrison rescued two kidnapped victims in separate operations in Sabon Birni and Isa LGAs of Sokoto State. During the engagements, troops also recovered one AK-47 rifle, three magazines, and ten rounds of ammunition. Meanwhile, troops of 1 Battalion, in collaboration with vigilantes in Kebbi State, arrested two suspected criminals at Ngaski, who have been handed over to the police.

Troops also recorded successes in the North Central region. In Niger State, soldiers of 22 Brigade repelled a violent extremists’ attack on Babanna, neutralizing one insurgent and recovering one AK-47 rifle, four magazines, 60 rounds of ammunition, 323 rounds of 7.62mm x 54mm, and a mobile phone. In Nasarawa State, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke rescued a kidnapped victim in Keana LGA, arrested a suspected cattle rustler in Akwanga LGA, and recovered ₦3,200 and a machete.

Similarly, in Omoku, troops intercepted a vehicle laden with 600 litres of illegally refined AGO, while in Delta State, soldiers of 181 Amphibious Battalion arrested eight suspects, including an impostor posing as a Lieutenant Colonel.

These coordinated operations also disrupted the movement of criminal logistics, curtailed illegal oil bunkering, and denied terrorists vital supplies needed to sustain their activities. Troops remain on high alert, continuing clearance patrols and community engagement across all operational theatres.

MNJTF Conducts Free Medical Screening in Borno's Vulnerable Communities

To enhance the health and well- being of local populations affected by the nefarious activities of insurgency within the Multinational Joint Task Force(MNJTF) Areas of Operation, the MNJTF Sector 3 has embarked on a 6- day free medical outreach programme as part of its non-kinentic approach towards winning the hearts and minds of the local population.

The initiative which was birthed through the African Union (AU) and financed by the European Union(EU) is aimed at providing free medical consultations and distribution of essential drugs to those in need , ensuring that vulnerable communities receive vital healthcare services and also encourage the local population to return to their ancentral homes.
The AU through the finance of the EU implements various CIMIC projects such as renovation of Schools, provision of educational kits, industrial boreholes, agricultural equipment, food and non- food items, medical outreachs, amongst others as requested by the MNJTF.

The initiative has been met with an overwhelming response from the locals, who have seized the opportunity to consult with medical professionals about various health issues and receive necessary treatments and medications at no cost.

The MNJTF’s civil-military cooperation activities, such as this outreach programme, demonstrate the organization’s dedication to alleviating the healthcare burden on communities with limited access to medical facilities and frequent disruptions due to instability.
By addressing the immediate healthcare needs of these communities, the MNJTF aims to build trust and cooperation between the military and local populations, ultimately contributing to regional stabilization.
