Mauritania’s Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the conviction of former President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz in connection with abuse of office and corrupt acquisition of wealth, confirming his 15-year prison sentence.

Aziz, who came to power in a 2008 coup, was originally sentenced to five-year jail term in December 2023 after being found to have accumulated $70 million worth of assets and capital during his presidency through fraudulent means.

Thousands of young Moroccans have taken to the streets in recent weeks, demanding better job opportunities, healthcare, and education, as frustration mounts over the government’s multibillion-dollar investment in World Cup infrastructure.

In cities like Casablanca, Rabat, and Fez, protesters have decried what they describe as misplaced priorities by authorities, who are pouring $500 million into building the Grand Stade Hassan II in Benslimane, a small city of about 70,000 people.

Japan has deployed troops to the northern prefecture of Akita following a surge in bear attacks that have left residents terrified and several people dead.

Authorities say encounters with bears have become a near-daily occurrence ahead of the hibernation season, as the animals forage for scarce food supplies. Bears have been sighted around schools, train stations, supermarkets, and even a hot spring resort.

Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has dismissed 115 of its personnel as part of ongoing internal reforms aimed at sanitising the Service and upholding its professional standards.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the agency said the dismissals took place over a period of time, following investigations into various acts of misconduct and corruption within its ranks.

The Service also warned members of the public to be cautious of some of the dismissed officers who still pose as active personnel to perpetrate fraudulent acts.

Cameroon’s security forces killed 48 civilians as they responded to protests against the re-election of President Paul Biya, the world’s oldest ruler, according to data shared with Reuters on Tuesday by two.

The majority of the victims were killed by live rounds although several died from wounds sustained when they were beaten with batons and sticks, Reuters quoted two U.N. sources as saying.

The Constitutional Council in Ivory Coast on Tuesday confirmed the re-election of President Alassane Ouattara for a fourth term, following an 89.77-percent landslide victory in an election criticised by opposition as “sham”.

Ouattara, 83, won the west African country’s October 25 election amidst clampdown on opposition.

Candidates of two major political parties, ex-president Laurent Gbagbo and former Credit Suisse banker Tidjane Thiam were barred from running in the election through pronouncement of the courts.

Two-month fuel blockade imposed by al-Qaeda-linked militants has plunged Mali’s capital, Bamako, into near paralysis, posing the most serious challenge yet to the country’s military junta and heightening fears of a possible political collapse.

Security analysts say the group, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), which has operated within 50 kilometres of the city for months, lacks the capacity or intent to capture Bamako, home to about four million people. However, its tactic of cutting off fuel supplies, forcing schools to shut and crippling businesses dependent on diesel power, has struck at the core of daily life.

Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs, Sim Ann on Tuesday told parliament that plans are ongoing to initiate a punishment system that earns online scammers at least six strokes with a cane, as the city-state intensifies efforts on syndicates following record-high losses linked to scam.

The Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy lost more than $2.8 billion through scams from 2020 up to the first half of 2025, the Minister told the parliament.

She said about 190,000 cases of scamming had been reported over that time period.
