Passing of Chief Audu Ogbeh, an Idoma Icon
It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Chief Audu Ogbeh, a revered elder statesman, distinguished leader, and cherished icon of the Idoma nation. Chief Ogbeh, aged 78, departed this world on Saturday, August 9, 2025, leaving behind an enduring legacy of integrity, service, and unwavering dedication to the betterment of his community and Nigeria as a whole.
Chief Audu Ogbeh was a towering figure whose contributions spanned agriculture, politics, and literature. As Nigeria’s former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (2015–2019), he championed transformative initiatives to boost local agricultural production and alleviate poverty, particularly in rural communities.
His visionary leadership also saw him serve as the Minister of Communications during the Second Republic (1982–1983) and as the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from 2001 to 2005. Beyond politics, Chief Ogbeh’s literary works, including his five acclaimed plays, remain a cornerstone of Nigerian literature, inspiring generations with their depth and insight.
Hailing from Efugo-Otukpa in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State, Chief Ogbeh was a proud son of the Idoma nation, often described as a modern-day Moses for his tireless efforts to uplift his people from poverty and create opportunities for the youth. His initiatives, such as the construction of rural roads and agricultural programs in Benue South, transformed countless lives and communities, earning him widespread admiration and respect.
The Ogbeh family, in a heartfelt statement, expressed their deep sadness, noting that Chief Ogbeh “departed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, service, and dedication to our nation and community.” They find solace in the many lives he touched and the exemplary standards he set, which will continue to inspire us all. Details of his funeral arrangements will be shared in due course, and the family has requested privacy during this period of mourning.
We join the Ogbeh family, the Idoma nation, and the entire country in mourning the loss of this extraordinary patriarch. Chief Audu Ogbeh’s life was a testament to selfless service, and his memory will forever be etched in our hearts.
