The Hausa are the largest ethnic group in sub-Saharan Africa and their Afro- Asiatic language Hausa is the most spoken language in sub-Saharan Africa after Swahili.

Numbering approximately 80 million, the Hausa are centred in the Sahelian and sparse savannah regions of southern Niger and northern Nigeria, but a significant number can also be found in the western, central and eastern African countries of Gabon, Senegal, Gambia, Equitorial Guinea,Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali, Algeria, Chad, Sudan, Cameron, Republic of Congo, and Central African Republic.

During the second half of the last millennium the Hausa founded Islamic empires which are recognized among the then wealthiest and culturally advanced in the world and greatly influenced Europe's emergence from the dark ages. Their principal cultural centers are Katsina, Sokoto and Timbuktu.

The Hausa have a long tradition as traders dating from centuries ago when they controlled trans-Saharan trade with North Africa. Today they are primarily traders, pastoralists, and farmers, but it is for their well established equestrian culture that they are known today.

For centuries, horses have been an important part of their lives and feature prominently in their cultural festivities and celebrations adorned with colorful fabrics and bronze ornaments.

Their horses are predominantly of the Dongola-Barb breed from Dongola in Northern Sudan interbred with Arab horses and ridden by their acclaimed horsemen and women.

Did you know that the Benin Kingdom was a very sophisticated Kingdom, civilized, well planned with paved roads and magnificent buildings and architecture!

Did you know that the greatest earth work made by man was the Great Benin Moat and the Great Walls of Benin which was described as a man made marvel. The Wall of Benin was four times longer than the Great wall of China and consumed a 100 times more material.

The above were destroyed by the British in 1897 during the invasion of the Benin Kingdom and that led to the destruction of more than a thousand years of Benin history and some of the earliest evidence of rich African civilization.

ASUU Calls Off 8 Month Old Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has conditionally called off its 8 months old strike.

While details of the condition would be made known in an official statement, the decision to suspend the strike was reached at the union’s National Executive Council meeting which was concluded in the early hours of Friday.

The meeting was called by the union to determine its next line of action after its state branches met over the Court of Appeal ruling last week.

The Court of Appeal had ordered ASUU to suspend the strike before its appeal of the ruling ordering lecturers to resume work can be heard.

Members of the union’s National Executive Committee, which comprises the chairmen of the state chapters and members of the national executive, attended the meeting at the ASUU National Secretariat in Abuja.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14 this year.

African Times earlier reported that ASUU embarked on strike on 14th February 2022 to protest the non-implementation of the 2009 Memorandum of Understanding reached with it by the Federal Government and for a host of other demands.

Appeal Court Discharges Kanu On Rendition as Malami Kicks.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has discharged and acquitted the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, of allegations of terrorism and treasonable felony.

A three-member panel of justices led by Justice Jummai Hanatu on Thursday struck out the seven-count charges preferred against him by the federal government.

The panel held that the trial court had no jurisdiction to entertain the case following Kanu’s rendition from Kenya.

Reacting to the judgement of the Court of Appeal, The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami SAN, says federal government will explore other options to pursue the trial

Earlier yesterday, a three-man panel of the Court of Appeal said the Federal High Court lacks the jurisdiction to try him in view of his abduction and extraordinary rendition to Nigeria in flagrant violation of the OAU Convention and protocol on extradition.

The AGF in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Dr. Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, noted that Mr. Nnamdi Kanu was only discharged and not acquitted, and said other legal options will be explored by the government for his trial.

“The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has received the news of the decision of the Court of Appeal concerning the trial of Nnamdi Kanu. For the avoidance of doubt and by the verdict of the Court, Kanu was only discharged and not acquitted.

Consequently, the appropriate legal options before the authorities will be exploited and communicated accordingly to the public” he said.

According to the statement, the issue decided by the Court of Appeal was on his rendition, and other issues which predates his rendition remain valid issues for judicial determination.

He said, “The decision handed down by the court of appeal was on a single issues that borders on rendition.

Terror Kingpin, Ali Dogo, 30 others Killed by Airstrike in Kaduna

Ali Dogo(AKA Yellow), a notorious bandit terrorizing Niger state was killed in an airstrike in Kaduna,
along with 30 of his fighters. It was gathered that the terror kingpin fled Niger state after the air task
force intensified their air raid on his former strong hold.

It was reported that Dogo relocated to Giwa local government area of Kaduna state in order to escape
the wrath of the military. The military, who were already on his trial, tracked Dogo and a handful of his
trusted lieutenants to the residence of one Alhaji Gwarzo at Yadi in the Giwa council area in kaduna
state before being killed by an air strike.

“Ali Dogo also known as Yellow was killed along side 30 of his lieutenants at the residence of a suspected
terror sympathizer, Alhaji Gwarzo at Yadi in the Giwa council area of kaduna state. The terror kingpin relocated to Kaduna after air task force intensified airstrikes around his camp in Niger state” said Mr.
Sodiq, a security analyst.

“We had eye on Yellow (Ali Dogo) for some times now. He was able to escape the air strikes targeted at
his camp in Niget state. He left for kaduna with some of his men. A special operations RECON team was
dispatched after him on a search and destroy mission with air support. We tracked him to Yadi in Giwa
local government area of Kaduna state” Mr. Sodiq said.

“Dogo and his men hunkered down at the residence of a suspected terror collaborator, one Alhaji Gwarzo. The team secured the surrounding areas in order to prevent civilian casualties in their AO(Area
of Operation). After visual confirmation that the HVT(High Value Target) was on site, we requested for a
strike package on the compound. The strike mission was approved by the air task force commander after
mission evaluation. The hammer of justice was down hard on the enemy with precision after painting the
target for the Air Component of Operation WHIRL STROKE” he narrated.

Refugee And Undeserved Children Enrolled In schools; an MSIISDG Initiative Intervention

Refugees & Underserved learning Solutions is an initiative mainly concerned with enrolling
refugees, underserved children, orphans and internally displaced children in Zamfara state.
Which became imperative due to the devastating spate of insecurity.

The initiative, which
was sponsored by MSIISDG Initiative, launched its project on 12th and 19th September
2022 in two different schools in the city of Gusau. The schools are Saminaka Model Primary
school as well as Danbaba Tsunami model primary school with 25 beneficiaries from each
school.

The children were fortunate among thousands to be selected, screened and provided with
Minimum Viable Product which were a set of uniforms, footwears, bags and writing materials. The initiative also provided tuition fees to the schools for each child enrolled.

During the launch phase, representatives from the local education authority, Universal Basic
education, ADC east and west, SBMC, local district heads as well as some parents were in
attendance.

The R&U Learning Solutions is committed to the pursuit of education [SDG4] with equitable
access to it for all [SDG5], especially the girl child in Nigeria and the whole of Sub- Saharan
Africa.

The Project Lead, Mufida Bashir Isyaku while answering a few questions affirms that,
“Humanitarian care is a responsibility she is passionate about due to her desire to see that
all children attend schools despite the circumstances. She added that already, more children
are screened on the waitlist and hopefully by the beginning of next term, about 100 or more
children would benefit from R&U learning solutions interventions. She finally concluded by thanking His Highness Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, for sponsoring the project and putting
on the light just at the end of the tunnel.

ASUU Strike: The End is Imminent

The Academic Staff Union of Universities( ASUU) has hailed the House of Representatives for its
intervention in the protracted crisis between university lecturers and the Federal Government and
reiterated willingness to call if it’s eight month strike, once demands are met.
The President of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, said, “For the first time, we have seen light at the end
of the tunnel.”

This is just as the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, who briefed the leadership of ASUU about
his meetings with the President Muhammadu Buhari over the crisis, said he expected that the strike
would be called off “in matter of days”.

Counsel for ASUU, Femi Falana, stated on Monday in chat with Channels Television after the Court of
Appeal in Abuja ordered the striking lecturers to resume academic duties.
“The legal advice that I will give to my clients is confidential. But I can assure you that the strike will soon
be called off,” Falana stated
Falana said he will advise his clients accordingly once the certified true copy of the court order of last
Friday has been made available to him.

“Advising clients to call off a strike is the most difficult aspect of my practice. On one occasion, Chief
Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) and I spent six hours persuading Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and other NLC (Nigeria Labour Congress) to call off a strike in compliance with a court order. Our advice to ASUU will be
based on the court order and other relevant reports.

I am reasonably confident that the consultations between the House and the Presidency will yield
positive results in the interest of the striking lecturers and the students,” he added.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Friday said the country
would soon hear from President Muhammadu Buhari on the protracted ASUU strike.
