Is Pap Enough for My Baby?
“But she loves her pap. She finishes everything. Why is she still not gaining weight?”
You’re not alone if you’ve ever asked this question.
Pap (ogi, akamu) is a trusted Nigerian staple — affordable, soft, easy to prepare, and babies enjoy it. But here’s the truth every mum needs to know:
👉🏽 Pap alone is NOT enough to meet your baby’s growing needs after 6 months.

Why? Let’s Break It Down:
Pap is mostly carbohydrates. It gives energy, but it’s very low in the key nutrients your baby needs to grow, build brain cells, and fight infections.
📉 100g of plain pap has:
Less than 1g of protein
Almost no fat
Very little iron, zinc, or vitamins
Almost no fiber
Meanwhile, from 6–24 months, babies need:
✅ Protein (for muscle and brain growth)
✅ Fat (for brain development and hormone production)
✅ Iron and Zinc (for immunity and strength)
✅ Vitamins (for healthy organs, skin, eyes, and blood)
✅ Fiber (for digestion and gut health)

So What Happens If You Rely on Only Pap?
Your baby may:
Look full but lack nutrients
Grow slowly or stop gaining weight
Fall sick often (malaria, diarrhea, cough)
Appear pale, weak, or irritable
Show signs of hidden hunger — enough calories, but missing key nutrients

What To Do Instead
Pap is not bad — but it must be enriched:
✅ Add protein: mashed boiled egg yolk, crayfish, unsweetened soy powder, fish powder, or milk
✅ Add healthy fat: groundnut paste, coconut oil, palm oil, or avocado
✅ Add iron: liver powder, fish powder, moringa
✅ Add vitamin C: pawpaw, orange purée, or mashed banana (served alongside to help with iron absorption)
✅ Use fermented pap: it’s gentler on the tummy and has probiotic benefits

Simple Enriched Pap Recipe (from 7 months)
• 3 tablespoons of fermented pap
• 1 tablespoon crayfish powder
• 1 teaspoon palm oil
• Half egg yolk (boiled & mashed)
• 1 tablespoon mashed pawpaw (added after cooling)
➡️ Stir gently and serve warm.

Final Word for Mummy
You’re not doing anything wrong.
You just need to upgrade pap from a belly-filler to a body-builder.
Don’t throw it away — enrich it with real, local, affordable options.
That’s how you turn “Just pap” into “Power pap.” 💪🏽

Umbilical Cord Around Baby’s Neck: What You Need to Know

One of the concerns many expecting moms have is hearing that their baby has the umbilical cord wrapped around their neck. This is called a nuchal cord, and while it sounds scary, in most cases, it doesn’t cause harm.

Here’s what you need to know:

✅ It’s Common – About 1 in 3 babies are born with the cord around their neck. Most of the time, it doesn’t cause any problems.

✅ Baby Can Still Get Oxygen – The cord is designed to carry oxygenated blood, and unless it’s tightly wrapped or compressed, your baby is still getting what they need.

✅ Monitoring is Key – If detected in an ultrasound, your doctor or midwife will monitor your baby’s movements and heart rate to ensure everything is fine.

✅ Most Babies Are Born Safely – Many babies with a nuchal cord are delivered vaginally without complications. In rare cases, if the cord is too tight, a doctor may recommend a C-section for safety.

❤️ What You Can Do:

Keep up with your prenatal checkups.

Monitor your baby’s movements—any decrease should be reported.

Trust your healthcare provider’s guidance for a safe delivery.

If you’ve been told your baby has a nuchal cord, try not to panic! Stay informed, stay calm, and focus on a healthy and safe birth experience.

Is Screen Time Hurting or Helping Your Child?

Excessive screen time can affect children’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Here are some of the common side effects:

♥️Physical Health Issues
Eye Strain and Vision Problems: Staring at screens for long periods can cause digital eye strain, dry eyes, and blurred vision.
Poor Posture: Slouching while using devices can lead to back, neck, and shoulder pain over time.
Sleep Disruption: The blue light from screens suppresses melatonin production, disrupting sleep cycles and leading to poor sleep quality.
Obesity: Prolonged screen use often replaces physical activity, increasing the risk of weight gain.

♦️Cognitive and Learning Delays
Reduced Attention Span: Overexposure to fast-paced digital content can make it harder for kids to focus on slower-paced activities like reading or schoolwork.
Hindered Academic Performance: Excessive screen time may interfere with study routines and reduce academic performance.

♥️Social and Emotional Challenges
Behavioral Issues: Prolonged exposure to violent or inappropriate content can lead to increased aggression or fear.
Social Isolation: Spending too much time on screens can reduce face-to-face interactions, impacting communication skills and emotional connections.
Addiction: Kids may develop a dependency on screens, leading to tantrums or frustration when devices are unavailable.

♦️Mental Health Concerns
Anxiety and Depression: Excessive use of social media or online gaming can lead to feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, and anxiety.
Stress: Overuse of screens, especially for entertainment, can overstimulate the brain, causing stress or irritability.

♥️Developmental Delays in Young Children
Speech and Language Delays: Too much screen time may limit verbal interactions with caregivers, slowing speech and language development.
Reduced Creativity: Overreliance on digital content may hinder imaginative play and problem-solving skills.

👉How to Counter These Effects:

Balance screen time with physical activity, creative play, and social interactions.
Ensure content is age-appropriate and educational.
Encourage frequent breaks and outdoor activities.
Use parental controls and set clear rules about device usage.
Managing screen time wisely can help minimize these risks and support healthy development in kids.

"My Baby’s First Word: Not What I Expected!"🤦‍♀️🙆‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️👇

Every mom dreams of their baby’s first word being something sweet like "Mama" or "Dada," right? Well, my baby had other plans.

For weeks, I kept saying, “Say Mama! Maa-maaa!” My husband was also trying hard, saying “Dada” over and over. We were both so sure the first word would be one of those.

One evening, we were sitting in the living room. My baby was playing with toys, babbling as usual. Then, out of nowhere, they loudly said, “Uh-oh!”

Yes, my baby’s first word was “Uh-oh.”

I couldn’t believe it! My husband and I just looked at each other and burst out laughing. The funny part? My baby said it while dropping their sippy cup on purpose, like they already knew what it meant!

Now, “Uh-oh” is their favorite thing to say—whether they spill food, drop toys, or even when nothing is wrong. It’s like they’ve figured out life’s little messes already.

So much for “Mama.” But hey, at least they’re talking now right?

What was your baby’s first word? Was it just as funny?

It baffles me lol 😁

Tips:
1. After opening liquid milk and you don't want to use all, Peel the label and cover the opening and place it in a cup of water.

2. After using tin tomatoes pour fresh groundnut oil on the rest in the and keep aside.

3. After cutting yam use palm oil to rub the half so it doesn't go bad.

4. After frying meat, chin chin etc sprinkle ginger powder to remove the smell so you can use it for something else.

5. After peeling sweet potato use groundnut oil to rub hands to remove gum.

6. Boil unripe plantain with the back to extract the iron.

7. Convert your remaining white yam to porridge, fried yam or roasted yam - there shall be no waste.

8. Rob Vegetable oil(groundnut oil) in your palm when slicing pepper, it will not pepper you ,during and after slicing.

9. Never store Onions and Potatoes together because both produce a gas that causes either of them to spoil quickly.

10. Put two or three orange leaves in your hot palm oil on the fire.
Let the leaves turn black before removing it.

By then your palm oil becomes pure groundnut oil also giving your food a nice taste.

11. To avoid feeling a peppering hotness on your hands after cutting pepper with bare hand scrub your hand with salt and red oil then wash it.

12. If you happen to over salt a pot of soup, just drop in a peeled potato.
The potato will absorb the excess salt.

13. If your Soup or Stew goes sour while warming it, add little piece of Charcoal and remove after warming, the taste will come back.

14. Never put citrus fruits (oranges, lemon, lime, etc) or tomatoes in the fridge. The low temperature degrades the aroma and flavor of these fruits.

15. If your salt is becoming lumpy, put a few grains of rice in with it to absorb excess moisture.

16. To reuse cooking oil without tasting whatever was cooked in the oil previously, cook a 1/4" piece of ginger in the oil. It will remove any.
