When Japan’s nationwide toll system went offline for 38 hours, drivers were allowed to pass freely to avoid traffic chaos. But what happened next stunned the authorities — once the system was restored, over 24,000 drivers voluntarily logged in and paid their tolls without being asked. No reminders. No fines. Just honesty.

This act of collective responsibility reflects Japan’s deeply rooted cultural value of “giri” (義理) — a sense of moral duty and social harmony. In a world where systems rely on enforcement, Japan proves that integrity can still thrive on trust alone. Even when no one was watching, thousands chose to do what’s right.

Pepkor Group, the South African retail giant linked to billionaire Christo Wiese, has finalized its R1.7 billion ($98.2 million) acquisition of Durban-based Retailability’s fashion brands, including Legit, Style, Boardmans, Swagga, and Beaver Canoe.

The deal adds over 460 stores across South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, and Eswatini, boosting Pepkor’s presence in the adultwear market.

The newly acquired brands will join the Pepkor Speciality division, which already houses Tekkie Town, Shoe City, Refinery, and Ayana.

This expansion strengthens Pepkor’s footprint across Southern Africa and pushes its total store count beyond 5,800, solidifying its position as one of the continent’s leading fashion and lifestyle retailers.

Icelandic architects are using lava ash — a byproduct of volcanic eruptions — to create eco-friendly insulating bricks that could revolutionize green construction.
These “lava bricks” are lightweight, fireproof, and filled with tiny air pockets that naturally trap heat, making them ideal for cold climates. Unlike synthetic foam insulation, which releases harmful chemicals and microplastics, lava-ash bricks are completely biodegradable and sustainable.
Local startups are sourcing volcanic materials from dormant regions, turning what was once considered waste into a valuable resource for sustainable housing. The method reduces both construction costs and carbon emissions by eliminating the need for imported materials.
Iceland’s approach shows how natural geology can become a tool for eco-architecture, paving the way for a future where homes breathe, insulate, and sustain themselves — just like the planet they’re built on.
