Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka believes President Bola Tinubu's proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State violates the spirit of federalism.

Tinubu declared an emergency in the oil-rich state on Tuesday due to the political crises and instability.

He also suspended the state's governor, Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all Rivers Assembly members for six months.

The president promptly named retired naval chief Ibok-Ete Ibas as the state's sole administrator.

Soyinka told The Africa Report that the Nigerian constitution gives the president too much power.

In response to questions over the declaration's legitimacy, Soyinka stated that some provisions of the constitution should be amended.

United States President Donald Trump has issued an executive order to dismantle the Voice of America (VOA).

Trump accused the government-supported VOA of spreading "radical propaganda" and being "anti-Trump".

The White House claims the order will ensure that taxpayers no longer support biased content, citing criticism from legislators and right-wing media sources.

VOA, founded during World War II to oppose N**i propaganda, reaches hundreds of millions of people worldwide each week.

The injunction targets VOA's parent business, the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which also sponsors non-profit organisations Radio Free Europe and Radio Free Asia.

These organisations were initially formed to combat communism. Managers have been advised to keep operations to the absolute minimum required by law.

Former military head of state Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) claims that the Muhammadu Buhari regime was ousted because he was displeased with the latter's policies and leadership style.

Babangida served as Buhari's chief of staff during the December 31, 1983 coup that overthrew Shehu Shagari's democratic administration.

In his autobiography, 'A Journey In Service', which was released in Abuja on Thursday, IBB said that the Buhari dictatorship issued "draconian" directives that resulted in the violation of citizens' fundamental rights and liberties.

He stated that he considered Buhari and his deputy, Tunde Idiagbon, "were detrimental to the nation's progress" and that his unhappiness "eventually led to its ouster in 1985".

The United States has scheduled the deportation of 201 Nigerians as part of President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration.

Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, minister of state for foreign affairs, discussed the development when Richard Mills, US ambassador to Nigeria, made her a courtesy visit at the Tafawa Balewa House in Abuja.

Mills stated that "those to be repatriated would be dropped in Lagos." There wouldn't be room to debate whether it should be in Port Harcourt or Abuja.

Tigran Gambaryan, the Binance executive, insists Nigerian officials demanded a bribe from him despite the federal government's denial.

Gambaryan, Binance's head of financial crime compliance, was detained in Nigeria between February and October 2024.

According to the federal authorities, his detention was part of a larger investigation into alleged money laundering and economic destabilisation linked to Binance's operations in Nigeria.

Gambaryan recounted his experience in a post on X, formerly Twitter, alleging that certain Nigerian MPs requested hefty cryptocurrency bribes. He accused three MPs of seeking a $150 million bribe.

He also stated that Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, demanded large sums of money from Binance in exchange for his political ambitions.

In response, Nigeria's minister of communication and national orientation, Mohammed Idris, called Gambaryan's charges "outrageous" and "defamatory".

Vice-President Kashim Shettima believes African countries cannot continue to rely on foreign designs for growth.

Shettima addressed on Thursday at an Abuja symposium commemorating Kayode Fayemi, former governor of Ekiti state, who turned 60.

Shettima stated in his address titled 'Africa in the post-idea world' that African countries have relied on foreign institutions and ideologies that see the continent as consumers rather than creators.

The vice-president stated that the continent should not view prosperity as a gift, but rather as a prize to be earned through responsible leadership in all aspects of society.

The president of the National Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, claims that electricity tariffs and taxes are killing Nigerian workers.

“…I want to use this particular meeting to put in our displeasure on the electricity tariff and the tax that is killing the workers now the tax regime, which is unbearable. So those are actions that are still on course, you know, until they are addressed. So that’s the summary of the meeting,” the NLC president said.

A federal high court in Abuja has granted N10 million bail with one surety to Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress's (AAC) 2023 presidential candidate.

The sitting judge, Musa Liman, directed Sowore to deposit his passport with the court registrar on Thursday.

Liman determined that the surety must have verified landed property in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Following the ruling, Sowore's counsel, Marshall Abubakar, begged the court to return his client to the legal team within a few hours pending the fulfillment of the bail requirement.

The judge gave Sowore a 24-hour extension to remain with his counsel.

The case has been delayed until April for further trial.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Usman Yusuf, a former executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), on charges of fraud.

Dele Oyewale, an EFCC spokeswoman, confirmed the arrest to The Cable.

Yusuf was arrested by EFCC agents at his home on Wednesday.

According to Oyewale, the former executive secretary would be arraigned today at Court 44 of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Kuje.

According to a court document viewed by TheCable, the EFCC charged Yusuf with allegedly using his position at the time to provide himself an unfair benefit by sanctioning the purchase of a vehicle for N49,197,750 instead of the authorised N30,000,000.

The EFCC also accused Yusuf of retaining private interest in the corporate entity known as GK Kanki Foundation, and without due process, awarding a contract in the sum of N10.1m, in favour of the GK Kanki Foundation, for the purported training of 90 persons — when the actual number of trainees was 45.
