OSUN OSOGBO GROVE: A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE AT THE BRINK OF NEGLECT

Osun Osogbo Grove is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts millions of participants yearly. It is an eyesore that, despite the level of popularity it has gained as a tourist destination, is not being properly managed. Year after year, complaints are made, yet no reasonable action has been taken.

The issue does not end there. Illegal miners operating close to the Osun River have affected the purity of the water, with recent findings indicating high levels of cyanide in the river. This poses a health risk, especially as some people rely on this water for drinking. Thousands of people will troop to the river on August 7 to celbrate the Osun Osogbo festival in the same deplorable state.

We implore all relevant authorities and stakeholders to look into this matter. We see how other nations properly manage and preserve their tourist sites, and we must not become a poster child for a culture of mismanagement.
