When we first shared the story of Joshua, our alumnus, who received the President’s National Youth Service Corps Honours award for his exceptional contributions to community development during his service in Jigawa State, many of you were inspired by the incredible community projects that gave him the recognition.

But here’s the part you haven't read: 👇

Joshua says his service year began with frustration and uncertainty, until one powerful speech by the Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Mohammad Hameen Nuhu Sanusi completely changed his perspective: “You are here because these communities need you,” the emir had said.

That short statement sparked a journey that not only transformed communities but also reshaped Joshua's life.

Today, Joshua is a recipient of a fully funded Master’s and PhD scholarship. He has also been automatically employed into the federal civil service, is the founder of the Visionary Youth Africa Foundation, and looks forward to achieving even greater things.

What we learn from Joshua’s story is that finding your purpose in life, selflessly committing to it, and persevering through challenges is the true key to success.

And when you give your best, the rewards, both tangible and intangible, will follow.

UNIVERSITY LECTURERS AND PROFESSORS DESERVE BETTER PAY

Let's look at salaries of Nigerian lecturers and compare it with others around the world

Documents obtained by The PUNCH show that under the Consolidated University Academic Salary structure, Graduate Assistants earn between N125,000 and N138,020 monthly, while professors earn between N525,010 and N633,333.

Assistant Lecturers earn between N150,000 and N171,487; Lecturer II (N186,543–N209,693); Lecturer I (N239,292–N281,956); Senior Lecturer (N386,101–N480,780); and Readers (N436,392–N522,212).

University lecturer and professor salaries across countries.

Switzerland: $142,740 to $185,000 per year (one of the highest-paying countries for professors globally)

Australia:$75,159 to $150,000 per year (associate professors earn between AU$150,000 - AU$178,000, while professors earn AU$195,000 - AU$207,000)

United States: $90,000 to $102,400 per year (average salary for full professors)

United Kingdom: $63,504 to $110,000 per year (average salary for professors is £79,000)

Canada: $58,149 to $98,500 per year (full professors earn a median salary of CA$125,000)

Germany: $63,144 per year (salaries determined by government, with associate professors earning varying amounts)

Netherlands: $71,946 per year (average salary for professors, with ranges from €45,620 - €128,900 annually)

Singapore: $89,640 per year (one of the top-paying countries in Asia)
Hong Kong: $78,597 per year

To give you a better idea, here are some specific university salaries in the Netherlands

Delft University of Technology*: €40,000 - €60,000 per year
University of Twente: €50,000 - €65,000 per year

Universiteit Van Amsterdam: €55,000 - €71,000 per year

These figures demonstrate that professor salaries abroad can be quite lucrative, especially in countries with strong economies and a high standard of living.
