BREAKING: Tinubu to Visit U.S. Tuesday, Meet Trump’s Vice President JD Vance
President Bola Tinubu is set to visit the United States on Tuesday for high-level diplomatic meetings amid tensions over alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria and threats of possible U.S. military action issued by President Donald Trump.
According to presidency sources, Tinubu will meet with U.S. Vice President James David Vance, who has been delegated by Trump to represent him during the visit, barring any last-minute changes.
Earlier, Tinubu’s media aide, Daniel Bwala, confirmed that both leaders were expected to meet soon, either in Abuja or Washington, to strengthen cooperation on counterterrorism and global security. Bwala noted that both Tinubu and Trump share a firm commitment to combating terrorism and protecting religious freedom, highlighting U.S. support in supplying arms to Nigeria’s security forces.
Trump recently warned that the United States could suspend aid and possibly take military action if attacks on Christians in Nigeria continue, saying his administration’s “Department of War” had been instructed to prepare for possible intervention.
In response, the Nigerian Presidency dismissed claims of a Christian genocide, reaffirming that the country’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion and equality for all faiths. President Tinubu emphasised that his administration actively engages both Christian and Muslim leaders and continues to promote peaceful coexistence nationwide.
He further described the external portrayal of Nigeria as religiously intolerant as “inaccurate,” stressing that religious tolerance remains a core national value and that his government will continue working with the United States and global partners to strengthen mutual understanding and community protection.
