SPEAK YOUR TRUTH.

If I had to start my remote work journey all over again, there are things I would definitely do differently.

I would not confuse applying with having a strategy.

I would not send generic messages and expect recruiters to magically notice me.

I would not wait for opportunities to find me.

I would not be afraid to show my work.

And I definitely would not sign a contract just because I was excited to finally receive an offer.

Remote work has given me opportunities I once prayed for, but getting here also came with lessons.

Some were uncomfortable.

Some were expensive.

Some came from making mistakes.

But that’s the thing about building a career. You don’t just collect wins. You collect wisdom too.

So let me ask you:

Everyone is talking about the P-Square situation.

Whether you’re following the story or not, one lesson stood out to me:

Never sign an agreement you don’t fully understand.

Years ago, I almost signed my first international remote contract because I was simply excited someone wanted to pay me in dollars.

A lawyer reviewed it before I signed.

One clause would have stopped me from teaching that skill again.

Another raised questions around ownership.

Another around jurisdiction.

I walked away.

At the time, I thought I had lost an opportunity.

Looking back…

I protected my future.

Today, many people rush into remote jobs, freelance projects and startup equity agreements because they’re desperate to “finally get an opportunity.”

Opportunity is good.

Protection is better.

Read every clause.

Ask questions.

Negotiate when necessary.

And if you don’t understand something…

Get someone who does.

One signature can change your career, for better or worse.

One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned in my remote work journey is this:

Sometimes you’ll be rejected for reasons completely outside your control.

Not because you aren’t qualified.

Not because you interviewed badly.

Not because your CV isn’t strong.

Sometimes…

It’s simply because of where you’re based.

I’ve experienced it.

And if you’re an African applying for global opportunities, there’s a chance you have too.

It can be discouraging.

But here’s what I’ve learned:

Don’t personalise every rejection.

Some companies have location restrictions.

Others have legal or tax requirements.

Others simply haven’t expanded hiring to your country yet.

That doesn’t reduce your value.

So if you’re reading this after another rejection…

Keep going.

Your next opportunity won’t ask how many times you were rejected.

It will ask whether you’re ready.
