If you are using any media on the internet, to promote your brand or business, you are a digital marketer, or are using digital marketing.
It is imperative you know the following:
โ
Your job is not to make content look good. Your job is to make content achieve a business objective.
โ
Know the business before you market it. Understand the offer, customer, competitors, pricing and what makes the brand worth choosing.
โ
Know exactly who you're talking to. "Everyone" is not a target audience.
โ
Understand the customer's problem before selling the solution. People respond to content that speaks to something they actually care about.
โ
Engagement is not conversion. Likes, comments and views are useful signals, but they are not the same as leads or sales.
โ
Every platform behaves differently. What works on LinkedIn may flop on TikTok, and what works on Instagram may not work on Facebook.
โ
Your content needs a job. Some content should attract attention, some should educate, some should build trust, and some should drive action.
โ
Learn to read data. Reach, watch time, saves, clicks, DMs, leads and conversions tell you more than your personal opinion about whether a post "did well."
โ
Don't blame the algorithm for everything. Sometimes the problem is the offer, the message, the creative, the audience or the strategy.
โ
And finally, remember that marketing is not about being everywhere. It is about being where your customers are and giving them a reason to notice, trust and choose you.
A good digital marketer doesn't just ask, "What should we post?"
They ask, "What does the business need this content to achieve?"
