Before 1897, the area now known as Nigeria didn't have a single, unified name. Instead, it was referred to by various descriptions, including¹ ² ³:
- British Niger Territories: This name reflected the British claims in the region from the mid-19th century.
- Niger Coast Protectorate: This name was used to describe the protectorate established in the Niger Delta.
- Royal Niger Company Territories: This name was used to describe the territories under the jurisdiction of the Royal Niger Company, a British company that played a significant role in the region.
- Central Sudan, Niger Empire, Niger Sudan, and Hausa Territories: These names were also used by some geographers and travelers to refer to the area.

The name "Nigeria" was coined by Flora Shaw, a British journalist, in 1897. She suggested the name, derived from the Niger River and the Latin word "area," to describe the territories under British influence. The name gained acceptance and was officially adopted in 1914 when the Northern and Southern Protectorates were amalgamated by Lord Frederick Lugard.
