The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the death of 12 persons in the explosion that occurred at an illegal crude bunkering site at Rumuekpe Community in Emohua local government area of the State.

The incident occurred at about 2am on Friday when one of the buses loaded with crude went up in flames while trying to navigate to an illegal refining point in the area.

An environmentalist and executive director Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre, Fyneface Dumnamene confirmed the incident to The Punch.

Dumnamene said the explosion occurred at the Trans Niger Pipeline operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Commission.

He stated, ”Report reaching YEAC-Nigeria through its Crude Oil Spill Alert System and members of its One Million Youth Volunteers Network of Human Rights Defenders and Promoters in the Niger Delta” in Rumuekpe Community, Emuoha, has it that an explosion at a crude oil tapping point has left many people dead.

“The explosion happened at about 2am today, Friday, March 3, 2023 when one of the buses that was loaded with crude oil to drive to another area where the refining will take place in artisanal refineries kicked his vehicle leading to the explosion.

“The explosion and fire which left dozens including women dead and burnt beyond recognition with many other vehicles and tricycles burnt to ashes at the tapping point was said to be on the Trans Niger Delta Pipeline that passed through the community.

He added that all those who were at the exact tapping point in the “pit” got killed while some of those who had loaded the crude and waiting to load including women have been killed by the explosion.

The spokesperson of the Rivers state Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko also said four vehicles, a tricycle and one motorcycle were burned to ashes.

The statement added that “preliminary investigation by the Police Command indicates that the victims were scooping crude product when the site caught fire.

“So far, about 12 persons are believed to have been burnt to death. The identities of the victims are still unknown.

“Five vehicles, four Keke NAPEP, and one motorcycle were all burned to ashes.

Rivers Governor, Wike Makes Case for Rotational Presidency

…harps on restructuring, true federalism

Rivers State Governor, Nysom Wike has advocated the inclusion of zoning of the office of the president for equity and fairness.

The governor, who made the suggestion yesterday in Ibadan at the commissioning of the 3.2 kilometres dual carriage Ibadan Airport Road named after a former governor of the state, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo and the 500,000 Litres Aviation Fuel Storage and Dispensing Facility located within the Ibadan Airport, Alakia, stated that the presidency should be constitutionally rotated among the two main regions of the north and south by all political parties.

His words: “Let me on behalf of my entourage thank you for according to us this opportunity to commission this important project. I am not surprised with the performance of Seyi Makinde.”

“He can only belong to the G-5 standing on their feet. It is those who are afraid and have nothing to offer that cannot stand firm and be bold and take a decision and say that. We must put this right it doesn’t matter who is involved.”

“Your governor has shown he has the capacity. He has shown he is a man you can depend on. He has shown that he is a man that will not tolerate complete slavery.”

“I’m happy that is one of those making history by making sure that power shifts to the South. I have told people that those who fight for change, those who fight for revolution may not be the direct beneficiaries of that fight.”

“But today history has that all of us now are aware that when power finishes from the South it will go to North.”

“When it finishes from the North it will go to the South. It doesn’t have to be in the constitution before it can be implemented. I thank Nigerians for standing firm to see that this issue materialised.”

“Seyi is doing quite a lot of things. Somebody has said here that you (Makinde) are humble, your own humility is infectious but you are very dangerous.”

“He is very humble. He doesn’t talk like us but he is very dangerous. Somebody who is not talking when you see him in action, you will say is this Seyi really,” he said.

While speaking Governor Seyi Makinde explained that the completion and commissioning of the 3.2 kilometres road and the aviation fuel tank projects were the fulfilment of the promises he made to the people of the state.

He called on the people of the state to re-elect him on March 11, so that the state could move onto Omituntun 2.0, which is about the sustainable development of the state.

According to Makinde, who stated that the commissioning of the Airport Road is part of his vision to turn the surrounding areas of Ibadan Airport into an aerotropolis, all the projects and policies of his government have ensured that the Oyo State economy continues to grow.

He added that his administration will continue to serve the good people of the state till the last day of his first tenure in office and that it will continue to honour heroes and leaders, who have served the state diligently.

Makinde further stated that with the completion of the Aviation Fuel Facility, an aircraft will be fuelled for the first time in the history of Ibadan Airport and that the state is well on its way to achieving the upgrade of the Ibadan Airport to an international airport.

He said: “You are all welcome to the commissioning of the Dr Victor Omololu Olunloyo Ibadan Airport Road, which is part of our vision of turning the surrounding areas of Ibadan Airport into an aerotropolis.

“They have explained to us the other projects attached to it but history is being made here today because after the speeches here, for the first time, an aircraft will be fuelled at Ibadan Airport. Those who are saying all the projects we have been carrying out are audio will see the video of the aircraft being fuelled here.

Bizarre as Father Breaks Eight-Week-Old Son’s Hand For Disturbing His Sleep

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Imo State Chapter and National Human Right Commission (NHRC) have called on Imo State Government and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to immediately arrest and prosecute Mr Confidence Amatobi, for allegedly breaking his eight-week-old baby’s arm.

Mr Amatobi was said to have assaulted little Miracle’s arm for disturbing his sleep. The incident led to the amputation of the fractured arm.

NAWOJ, NHRC and the aggrieved mother of attacked Miracle, made the call for justice on behalf of the baby in Owerri the Imo State Capital.

Imo State Chairperson of NAWOJ, Dr Dorothy Nnaji who spoke to newsmen in Owerri after visiting the amputated boy at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri, disclosed that the injury inflicted by the 31-year-old father, a native of Amurie in Isu LGA of the state led to the amputation of the little boy’s right hand.

Mrs Nnaji who frowned at the dastardly cruel act of Mr Amatobi expressed shock that a father could assault his innocent child simply because he was crying and disturbing his sleep.

She disclosed that Mr Amatobi was reported to have repeatedly hit the baby with a plastic object to stop him from crying until the right hand broke.

Describing the attack on the little boy as the height of child abuse, the chairperson demanded justice for the baby since he can’t speak for himself.

Similarly, the Imo State Coordinator NHRC, Mrs Ukachi Ukah, while reacting to the incident also condemned the brutality and insisted that justice must be allowed to take its course.

Narrating her ordeal, the mother of Miracle, Mrs Favour Chikwe who hails from Idemili Community, Anambra State disclosed that she had left Miracle with his father on Friday, October 7, 2022, to use the convenience, when the incident happened.

Favour recalled that she overheard her baby crying uncontrollably and had to rush back to know the cause of her cry only for her to discover that his right hand was swollen and bone broken from the beating he received from his father.

Amatobi, it was learnt, confessed that the baby was disturbing him with his cry while he was sleeping and he had to try to stop him by battering him.

He said: “Upon noticing that he has broken the baby’s hand, he used sticks and rubber bands to bind the broken bones together.”

She said: “When l confronted him about what he did, he locked us in the room, to prevent me from telling people about his wicked deed or seek for help. He also collected my phone from me so that I will not call the neighbours.”

She narrated how she managed to take the baby to hospitals in the community that refused to treat the baby before she took him to FMC Owerri where the amputation was done.

The woman appealed for support to save her child while calling on the state government, NHRC and other civil society organisations to assist her to get justice for her son.

Man arrested after his girlfriend’s l body with a br%ken neck was found in her apartment in Akwa Ibom

A lady identified as Uwakfon Sunday Akpan has passed on after she was allegedly k by her live-in boyfriend, Godwin, in her apartment in Akwa Ibom State.

It is reported that she was m¥rdered on Tuesday, September 13. A report by human rights activist, Levite Akpan said, “The deceased is my cousin and was making preparations to bring her daughter back home. She had spoken with my mum on how she could assist her daughter to get to a transport bus to take her to Uyo where she stays. Uwakfon had made arrangements with a driver that will bring her daughter back to her. On Monday night, she called my mum to know if her daughter was set to go cause she was supposed to leave on Tuesday, which my mum told her where she’ll meet with the driver and her daughter.
On Tuesday, as early as 5am, my mom got a call from my cousin's number thinking it was her that was calling. When my mum picked the call, she noticed it was a male voice. Then, the guy told my mom that Uwakfon had passed on. My mum thought it was a joke. She called the line severally until he revealed that Uwakfon was sick and had complained about having headaches. He said he gave her paracetamol and left for church only to return to meet her de@d.

My mum doubted his story because when she spoke with Uwakfon, she didn’t sound like one who was sick. Some relatives went to my cousin’s house and found her l body with w@unds all over and her neck broken. We quickly invited the police and Godwin was arrested.

However, Godwin Essang who k my cousin, is still denying he did not commit the crime. The major problem is the police are trying to accept inducement to k the case. We need justice for Uwakfon Sunday Akpan.”

Muslim-Muslim Ticket: Akeredolu Begs Clerics, Appeals for Chance In 2023

The Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has apologised to Christian clerics over the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress.

He also appealed to them to help talk to their followers about the need to forgive and give the party a chance.

According to the statement, the Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum spoke on Sunday at the 40th Holy Ghost Convention Dinner of The Sword of the Spirit Ministries held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.

He said, “I understand our feelings because I am one of you. I am a Christian. All of us here are worried. What will be our gain, and that, why is my party, the APC, throwing up a Muslim-Muslim ticket?

“It has been a real issue for all of us; even members of the party. We have debated it, fought it and done so many things about it. I have always said to people, that my fight was for a Southern President. Now it has come to the South-West, will I now throw the baby away with the bathwater? Can I, in all honesty, do it? Should I, in all honesty, do it?

“We call it a matter of coincidence. It is a matter of conscience. All of us are here, why don’t we look at it from one angle? The buck stops on the table of the President. Do we have a capable hand who can manage the affairs if given the opportunity? Do you have a man who is bold enough to challenge incursions into our land? That is it.

“All of us here have lived together for years, and we didn’t allow religion to cause a fight among us. We have Muslims in our families and there is no fight. We have many leaders in Yoruba land who have both Muslims and Christians in their families and there is no fight.

“So, we want to appeal to our people that this is our time. I want to appeal to all our senior pastors and general overseers to help talk to their followers. We politicians can only do little. This is our time, please don’t be angry.”
