The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun on Thursday joined Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, to perform the groundbreaking for the redevelopment of the Ijeh Police Barracks in Obalende. When completed, the housing project is expected to deliver 2,200 modern housing units for police officers and their families.

At the groundbreaking event, the governor noted that the project underscored the state’s commitment to addressing the housing deficit and improving the welfare of security personnel.

Sanwo-Olu said, “Today is a day for our law enforcement officers because two of the activities that we are engaging in today are for their welfare and our collective security and safety of lives and property.”

“For decades, this barracks stood as a symbol of resilience, sheltering countless officers who have dedicated their lives to protecting our state. However, the wear and tear of time, coupled with insufficient maintenance, led to severe structural dilapidation.”

The Defence Headquarters has denied reports stating that the French military was planning to establish a base in Nigeria.

In a statement by the Director Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba on Monday said the clarification was necessitated due to reports doing the rounds, that French soldiers had arrived in the country.

“The attention of Defence Headquarters has been drawn to online reports alleging the arrival of the first contingent of French soldiers in Maiduguri towards establishing a French Military base in North East Nigeria.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria hereby state unequivocally that this information is fake, totally false and mischievous. It would be recalled that Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa CFR, recently addressed this matter in different media forums. In which he debunked the news and such speculations.”

Buba urged the general public to disregard the news and speculations still making rounds in some quarters.

“It is clear that these are the antics of mischief makers,” he added, saying that nevertheless, the military will continue to carry out its constitutional responsibilities, most professionally and ensure the territorial integrity of Nigeria.

The English Premier League has witnessed a managerial shake-up like no other this 2024/25 season, with four managers parting ways with their clubs in just seven weeks.

As the pressure to deliver results intensifies, the revolving door of managerial changes highlights the high stakes and cutthroat nature of one of football’s most competitive leagues.

All four dismissals were recorded within 49 days, from October 28, 2024, to December 15, 2024.

The pressure in the Premier League shows no signs of easing, as speculation swirls about who might be the next manager to face the axe.

With club owners growing increasingly impatient for results, every underwhelming performance intensifies scrutiny.

Momentum is building around potential candidates for dismissal, as fans and pundits alike dissect tactics, results and squad morale.

In a league where expectations are sky-high, the managerial hot seat has never been more volatile. It only begs the question: Who is the next to be fired with two of the managers getting sacked within a few hours difference on Sunday?

In this piece, a look at the four managers who have been shown the exit door so far this EPL 2024/25 season.

Erik ten Hag, Manchester United
Former Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag, was relieved of his duties after the club dropped to a lowly 14th in the table, marking their fourth defeat in nine league games.

The club, which has 20 top-flight league titles to its name, including 13 titles following the EPL’s rebranding in 1992, suffered heavy defeats at the hands of Brighton, Liverpool, Tottenham, and West Ham.

Due to the club’s lacklustre season start, the Dutch manager was replaced in late October 2024 by his assistant and former club striker, Ruud van Nistelrooy, as interim manager.

Nistelrooy bagged three wins and a draw.

Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

United currently sits in the 13th position on the log, with 22 points, under new manager Ruben Amorim. Their latest win was a late 2-1 thrilling comeback victory over archrivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Steve Cooper, Leicester City
2016 EPL-winning side Leicester City announced the sack of former manager Steve Cooper after the Foxes lost 2-1 at home against Chelsea in November 2024.

Leicester had a poor run in the domestic league, managing only two wins, four draws, and six losses.

The Welsh manager, who also coached Nottingham Forest, joined the Foxes on a three-year deal in June 2024 but failed to convincingly deliver with a five-game winless run in all competitions.

He took over from Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca, who guided Leicester to last season’s Championship title before joining Chelsea.

So far, Leicester has lost half of their total 16 league games this season, occupying the 17th position on the log—one position lower than what Cooper left them with at 16th.

However, they are two points above the relegation zone.

Gary O’Neil, Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves)
Wolves announced the sack of its manager, Gary O’Neil, on Sunday, December 15, 2024, after his appointment last year.

The club succumbed to four consecutive EPL defeats, losing two home games against Bournemouth and Ipswich and two at Everton and West Ham.

O’Neil’s last game for Wolves saw Algerian midfielder Rayan Ait-Nouri booked a red card after getting a second yellow card.

Wolves have lost 11 games with only two wins, sitting second from the table bottom with nine points from 16 games.

Russell Martin, Southampton
Newly promoted side Southampton on Sunday sacked Russell Martin after their embarrassing 5-0 home defeat to Tottenham.

The Saints endured the defeat before their fans at the St. Mary’s Stadium, further compounding their wretched run of 13 losses in the domestic league.

In a statement, the club said it had taken the “difficult decision to part ways” with Martin, however, citing the “urgency of needing results to improve.”

While speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Martin, 38, noted that he was hurt as the team conceded five first-half goals to Tottenham.

The table bottom dwellers are rooted to the bottom of the table, nine points from safety.

BBC Sports reports that Martin guided the Saints to promotion last year in his first season in charge, beating Leeds United in the play-off final at Wembley.

Andel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, says the regional body struggled financially before Nigeria’s payment of ₦85bn, $54m levy on Sunday.

“Up till last year, and the beginning of this year, we are cash-strapped at ECOWAS because much of the community levy remains with the member states. That is why this exemplary act by Nigeria is so important,” Musah said on a Television programme on Monday.

This photograph shows flags of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) countries at the Nigerian presidential villa, during the 65th ordinary session of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government in Abuja on July 7, 2024.
On Sunday, at the opening of the 66th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Abuja, ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Touray, said Nigeria has cleared its levy to the regional body. Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, doubles as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

Musah applauded Tinubu for the payment of the levy to the commission saying that it will spur other member states to remit theirs.

He said, “First and foremost, congratulations to Nigeria, to His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his gesture which spurs other members to live up to their commitment to remitting the community levy to the community for the benefit of our people.

“What I will say regarding the N85bn and $54m that Nigeria has paid covered the period of the entire Year 2023 and the period from January to July 2024, which means Nigeria has cleared the entire 2023 areas and have moved on to pay half of this year’s levy.

“Why naira and dollars? It is because Nigeria, with an arrangement with ECOWAS agreed to pay part of the levy in local currency and part of it in dollars.

“Immediately after that announcement yesterday (Sunday) at the summit, countries like Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana started promising to fulfil their pledges by the end of the year.

“These are the three largest economies in the region, and if they demonstrate a will to pay, it will spur the others to follow suit.”

The regional bloc, the Economic Community of West African States, presently has 15 members. They are Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.

However, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, have opted to exit the bloc following military takeovers in the three countries, a development against the principle of democratic governance embraced by ECOWAS.

ECOWAS said the three countries will end their membership on January 29, 2025. The authority also set the period from January 29, 2025 to July 29, 2025 as a transitional period and to keep ECOWAS doors open to the three countries during the transition period.

Andel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, says the regional body struggled financially before Nigeria’s payment of

The Zone-2 Police Command in Lagos says it has detained two suspected international fraudsters that allegedly specialised in forging foreign certificates in Lagos and Ghana.

The AIG in charge of the zone, Adegoke Fayaode, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.

Fayoade said that the suspects allegedly offered N66m to the operatives with a view to free them but the offer was turned down.
NAN reports that the same zone operatives rejected a N174m bribe offered by a suspect in November to set him free.

Fayoade said that the suspects simply identified as Elvis, 23 and Kelly, 24, allegedly specialised in forging certificates of different nations and African Universities and defrauding their unsuspecting victims on the internet.

He said that the suspects have succeeded in acquiring exotic cars and erecting mansions in different parts of the country with the proceeds of their loot.

The AIG pointed out that luck ran out of the suspects after detectives at the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Zone received credible information from Nigerians in diaspora concerning some group of boys that specialised in forging foreign certificates.

According to him, on getting the information, he detailed the anti-corruption unit to investigate it and arrest the suspects without delay.

Fayoade said that based on his directives, the detectives stormed Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos waiting for the arrival of the suspects, whom they trailed to a five star hotel at Osapa-London in Lekki Area.

He said that the operatives arrested the suspects at a bus stop while they were about to escape secretly from the hotel, after monitoring their activities.

“Searching their luggages, one certificate of Blue Crest College, Ghana, belonging to Elvis and a student identity card of Academic City College belonging to Kelly were recovered.

“Further search revealed a transcript of an academic record from Blue Crest University belonging to Elvis.

“A letter of English proficiency from the said college and a letter of recommendation from the same Blue Crest College were recovered,” he said.

The AIG said that the suspects made useful statements to the police and confessed that they never got any admission into the school, stressing that they only procured the degree certificates through the help of a female Nigerian resident in Ghana.

“The suspects further confessed that the major aim of doing that is to enable them to get Ghana resident permit, which they got.

“The resident permit is showing them also as a student of Academic City University and that none of them has ever been admitted in the school.

“They claimed they paid a total of 26,000 Ghana Cedis for all the documents procured.

“They confessed that they procured all the documents to evade arrest in Ghana since they don’t have any means of livelihood.

Whenever police intercepted them, they showed their passports that they were students in Ghana.”

Fayoade said that the suspects were also allegedly involved in online romance scam, provision of foreign bank accounts for fraudulent transactions on the internet through what they call ‘ Facebook bombing’.

He said the suspects presented themselves as an American soldier by name Captain Donald Rowe, serving in Syria, whom they impersonated on Instagram, using his name to defraud innocent persons.

The AIG said that while detectives were making frantic efforts to get more credible information from the suspects, they started negotiating to bribe the operatives for them to be set free.

“I directed my men to play along and recover the money as an exhibit. Subsequently, the detectives played along and the suspects paid them a sum of N66m, which they collected and kept as an exhibit.

“The Nigeria Police authorities have written to the Ghana embassy to get more information about the result and their suspected partners in Ghana said to be spearheading the fraud.

Fayoade said that they had also spread their dragnets through the International Police, Interpol, to round up their foreign accomplices.
