Tragedy struck the Nigerian media industry on Monday following the death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a news anchor, reporter, and producer with ARISE News Channel.

Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie, was killed in the early hours of Monday during an armed robbery attack at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja. She was 29.

The management of ARISE News confirmed her passing in a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi, describing Maduagwu as “a vibrant voice who connected deeply with viewers and a supportive colleague whose absence leaves an irreplaceable void.”

Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu was not only a broadcast journalist but also a trained lawyer. Colleagues and friends remember her as a dedicated professional who combined brilliance with compassion.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to her parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones. Though her voice is silent, her spirit and legacy will endure,” the station said.

The Nigeria Police have launched an investigation into the incident, with calls mounting for the swift arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

Nigerian Woman, 60, Found Stabbed to Death in UK Apartment

A 60-year-old Nigerian, Nkiru Chima, was found dead with multiple stab wounds in her flat on Bushy Close, Romford, East London, on Saturday, July 27.

Police responded to a welfare call around 9:20 PM and discovered her body. She was confirmed dead at the scene.

Authorities believe her death is linked to a 20-year-old man found dead on the train tracks at Romford Station that same night. The man was known to Chima and may have died by su***de after the incident.

No arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing.

Can ₦712 Billion Transform MMIA or Build a New Airport?

Let’s be real. Anyone who’s travelled through MMIA knows it desperately needs a facelift. Leaky roofs, broken escalators, chaotic check-ins it's long overdue. But the price tag? It’s what’s raising eyebrows.

Based on available data, ₦712 billion (approx. $490 million) could build a brand-new international airport in some African countries maybe not to MMIA’s scale, but with modern aesthetics and efficient systems.

Compare this to Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa Bole International Airport expansion at under $400 million, or Ghana’s Terminal 3 in Accra completed for about $250 million. And they’re internationally praised for quality.

Back home, the announcement comes not long after the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway triggered debates over inflated costs per kilometre. Nigerians are asking: “Is this real development, or just another contract bazaar?”

At this point, many are not just looking for upgrades, they’re demanding accountability.

Because truly, if this money is used judiciously as stated by the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, MMIA could rival Africa’s best.

But if not, we may end up with another glamorous project that looks good on paper but fails to deliver where it matters most.

Fake Recruitment Alert: PSC Warns Nigerians, Says 2025 Police Intake Yet to Begin
