Before Christianity came to Owan land around 1895, indigenous religious practices formed the foundation of spiritual life, and the people worshipped multiple deities, one of which was Olokun. Olokun is a powerful Yoruba–Edo deity known as the “owner of the ocean” (Olo-Okun). The deity represents the vastness and mystery of the sea and is associated with wealth, fertility, healing, and prosperity. Often described as androgynous and residing in the depths of the ocean, Olokun is believed to exercise authority over other water spirits. Olokun embodies profound metaphysical knowledge, perseverance, and abundance, with strong connections to Aje (wealth) and the generative source of life itself, presiding over transitions such as birth and death. In contemporary times, however, the expansion of Christianity has contributed to the gradual marginalization of Olokun worship.
