In 2011 when I decided to leave the bank after being frustrated many times in different business which I took part in while as a banker, the first question that came up on my mind was about the business to do. I didn’t have an idea of the business that would pay me as much as the bank paid me. My life was more of a stereotypic personality. Yes I earned well enough, but not enough to put away the f

ears of losing my job like I experienced a few years back with one other bank before joining this bank where I took a decision that has since changed my life. I had a little amount of money to start a business, but I didn’t know which business to start. So I got robbed by people I relied on so much. The fact here is, most people who pose as helpers to find you a platform for business are your death traps. I learned that fact the hard way. With all of my bitter experiences and the steps I took to find my way to enjoying a life without depending on a job for salaries or bonuses. Experiences to recount......
An experience that taught me how to search for a good business to do and stop complaining about what people did to me,
An experience that revealed to me about the fact that even after losing my whole monies, I could start up a business again without money. An experience that gave me an edge above my competitors within the same industries – Real Estate; Telecomms, Health, Internet Marketing and still counting are the things I have brought to this platform (MONEY TALKS WITH TIM ABEL). In the heart of Lagos, Nigeria, a bustling city where dreams and hustle intertwine, four friends decided to venture into the unpredictable world of business.

They were once colleagues at a multinational firm—ambitious, smart, and eager to escape the rigid structure of corporate life to chase financial independence and purpose.

Their names were Chuka, Ibrahim, Tolu, and Emeka. Together, they pooled their savings and launched a digital logistics startup called LinkSwift. The concept was brilliant: a mobile app that connected local vendors with delivery drivers, promising fast, reliable, and affordable transportation of goods across the chaotic cityscape.

In the early days, excitement ran high. The men worked tirelessly, sleeping little, driven by passion and the promise of success. They rented a small office in Yaba, hired a few developers, and started onboarding drivers. Chuka, the most technical of the group, led product development. Ibrahim handled operations, Tolu focused on marketing, and Emeka dealt with finance and legal affairs.

They launched the app with a bang. Local media picked up their story, and word spread quickly. Users trickled in. Small shops and market women started using LinkSwift to send goods across town. Investors even started knocking.

But as weeks turned to months, cracks began to show. User growth plateaued. Drivers complained about delayed payments. Vendors were unhappy with frequent glitches in the app. The founders, once unified, now found themselves bickering in meetings.

Chuka insisted on focusing on app features, believing that a better product would attract users. Ibrahim wanted to increase driver incentives to keep the supply side strong. Tolu thought aggressive marketing was the answer. Emeka warned that cash burn was unsustainable.

One evening, after a particularly tense meeting, they sat in silence.

"Do you know," Emeka finally said, "that 96% of businesses fail within 10 years? 80% don’t even make it past the second year."

Tolu scoffed. "We won't be one of them. We’re different. We’re smart."

Emeka shook his head. "Surviving isn’t the same as succeeding. Even the 4% that make it aren’t necessarily profitable. They're just... hanging on."

That statement lingered in the room.

The truth was hard to ignore: LinkSwifta was not generating enough revenue to sustain operations. For all their effort, they were bleeding cash. The app wasn’t optimized, the drivers were demoralized, and customer retention was dismal.

Why? They asked themselves. Why did so few businesses grow, scale, and become profitable?

After several weeks of reflection, they decided to bring in a business mentor, an old professor from their university named Mrs. Abimbola. She listened patiently to their story and reviewed their operations.

"You boys have passion," she said. "But you’re mistaking motion for progress."

She pointed out three key issues:

"One: You lack ex*****on. Everyone has ideas. Few follow through with precision and consistency."

"Two: Your skills aren't sharpened for the battlefield you’re in. You’re tech and finance guys, yes. But do you understand sales? Do you know how to close deals? How to retain customers?"

"Three: You're not obsessed with revenue. Revenue isn't a by-product. It's the business itself. If you're not constantly doing the activities that generate income, you're just playing pretend."

Her words struck a chord.

From that day, the team shifted. Chuka spent less time tweaking features and more time interviewing users. He learned what truly mattered to them. Ibrahim created a robust onboarding and incentive system for drivers, focusing on keeping them happy and productive. Tolu went back to learn digital marketing in-depth, running ads not just to attract users but to convert and retain them. Emeka started scrutinizing every cost, every inflow, and built a simple dashboard that made it clear where money was being made or lost.

They set daily goals: new vendors signed up, rides completed, repeat users. They stopped pretending to be a tech company and embraced being a business—a company that had to sell, serve, and survive.

Revenue started trickling in. Then flowing. Customer retention improved. Drivers became brand evangelists. The app gained stability. Soon, they broke even. Then, slowly, they turned a profit.

Five years later, LinkSwifta is a household name in Lagos and has expanded into Abuja and Port Harcourt. They employ over 200 people and support thousands of drivers and vendors.

But the road was long and littered with lessons.

The biggest?

That most businesses don’t fail because the idea was bad. They fail because the leaders lacked drive, ex*****on, and the discipline to focus on revenue-generating actions. Because building a business isn't just about starting—it’s about surviving, improving, and selling, every single day.

LinkSwifta's story is not just about success. It’s about transformation. It’s about four men who learned the hard way that staying alive in business takes more than brains. It takes hunger, humility, and relentless action.

And even now, as they sip coffee in their new Lekki headquarters, they know the battle isn’t over. Because in business, survival is never the destination. It’s just the beginning.

NB: Ignore the names and focus on the message it brings.

FEAR has made more people impoverished than wealthy.
FEAR has taken more lives than it given more hopes
No one succeeds by creating space for FEAR to occupy.
Fear is one of the greatest banes of success, silently sabotaging dreams before they even begin.
It creeps into your mind and whispers doubts, magnifies risks, and convinces you to settle for comfort over growth.
Know this, that in life and business, fear often disguises itself as cautionary measure, and if unchecked, it paralyzes intending actions and also kills innovation.
FEAR has taken more lives than it has given more hopes
And if you must know, courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s the decision to act in spite of it. So, embrace fear as a signpost, not a stop sign.
Finally, you must know that your greatest breakthroughs lie just beyond your greatest fears.
Know this, that in life and business, fear often disguises itself as a cautionary measure, and if unchecked, it paralyzes intending actions and also kills innovation.

What Should Entrepreneurs Be Doing In A Tough Economy?

I was asked this question some times in 2022 by this gentleman.
The video you’re about to watch though may be short but speaks volume.

As Entrepreneurs, to be able to succeed and grow faster, you’ll need the best sets of people around you.

The challenge most business owners have today is finding these sets of people that can align their personal vision with your organizational vision.

Tough isn’t it?

If you’ve got that team of colleagues, Congratulations.

I’m tired… I’m tired of seeing defeat in the eyes 👀 of those under 60 who just decided they are too old when they are gonna live for several more DECADES!

I don’t even want to hear it from you if you’re under 45…you’re gonna live an entire another life if you’re 45, 2 more if you’re 35 and 4 more if you’re 25…society has you believing this nonsense…

Once you believe this … it becomes … once it becomes … your life gets good ❤️

at 35 years old, you got so much time
at 40 years old, you got so much time
at 55 years old, you got so much time
at 63 years old, you got so much time
at 72 years old, you got so much time
at 80 years old, you got so much time

Once you change your mind aka your perspective on your situation from concern or worry or even worst giving up to optimism, responsibility to change or best of all hope .. your life gets way better ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

My Story

• 2012 was one of the worst years of my life. I had just quit a job that I once liked to my bones with a view to do something better as an entrepreneur and start living ,my dreams;

I guess I didn’t know how tough it’s to become a successful one. So, I resigned from my highly paid job and went in with all of my strength and the excitement that comes with it, hoping it was going to be as smooth as it was in my paid employment.

Guess what? I went broke in less than 3 months.

I didn’t know where to start from or go from there.
