NDLEA Atrests Two Drug Cartels Behind Six Co***ne Shipments

Two major drug cartels behind six co***ne shipments concealed in various items destined for the United Kingdom has successfully uncovered and dismantled by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) following the arrest of five suspects, including a a businessman and property developer named as the ring leader, Alhaji Hammed Taofeek Ode.

According to NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the three week intelligence led operations was conducted in Lagos with the first breakthrough occurred on September 16, 2025, when operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport intercepted 174 parcels of co***ne weighing 13.40kg hidden in cocoa butter containers. A cargo agent was immediately arrested, and subsequent investigations led to the apprehension of Ode, who admitted ownership of the drugs valued at over ₦150 million. The suspect, who reportedly spent 27 years in Europe before returning to Nigeria in 2024, was traced and captured with police assistance.The NDLEA also intercepted five other UK-bound co***ne shipments hidden in hair cream and crayfish containers, leading to the arrest of three more suspects, including furniture maker Smith David Korede. The agency also seized 6.3kg of “Loud” cannabis from Thailand concealed in bed sheets and hibiscus flowers.

Boko Haram Activities Went Beyond Hunger or Poverty– Former President Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dedctibed the Boko Haram activities as a group that went beyond hunger or poverty, pointing to their sophisticated weaponry as evidence of external support. He stressed that the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls as a permanent scar on his tenure and urged the current government to adopt a “carrot-and-stick” approach to tackle the insurgents more effectively.

Highlighting the complexity of the crisis, Jonathan explained that his administration tried multiple strategies, including setting up committees for dialogue, adding that, Boko Haram insurgents once nominated Muhammadu Buhari, to represent them in peace talks with the Federal Government but none succeeded in ending the insurgency.

Jonathan stated this at the launch of Scars, a book by former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, Jonathan noted that this nomination made him believe Buhari could later negotiate the group’s surrender when he became president. However, the insurgency persisted.

Fake and Expired Drugs Worth N15 Billion Destroys in Ibadan

Fake, expired, and substandard drugs and products worth N15 billion wasvin Thursday destroyed in Ibadan, Oyo State by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

This was disclosed by the Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Martins Iluyomade who represented the agency’s Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye. Adeyeye stated that, the destroyed items included counterfeit and banned drugs such as Analgin, Cocodamol, codeine syrup, tramadol, oxytocin, and some vaccines.

Adeyeye emphasized NAFDAC’s commitment to ensuring that drugs, foods, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, packaged water, and beverages remain safe and effective for public use.

FG Directs Civil Servants To Authenticate Their Academic Certificates October 6

Starting October 6, 2025, staff and new hires of all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) are to use the National Credential Verification Service (NCVS) to authenticate their academic certificates.

The Federal Government gave the directive, following an approval by the Federal Executive Council on February 4 and conveyed in an August 8 circular by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, is to enforce compliance with the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) policy.

In collaboration with the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and the National Council for Colleges of Education (NCCE), all verified certificates will be issued a National Credential Number (NCN). MDAs must also file annual NERD compliance reports by March 30. NERD will provide regulations.

Naira Ranks Among Africa’s Weakest Currencies

Despite recent signs of improvement the Nigerian Naira has been ranked the ninth weakest currency in Africa according to Forbes September 2025 currency calculator emphasizing the lingering strain on Nigeria’s economy.

According to the ranking, the weakest currency in Africa is the São Tomé & Príncipe Dobra, trading at 22,282 per dollar, followed by the Sierra Leonean Leone at 20,970, the Guinean Franc at 8,680, the Ugandan Shilling at 3,503, and the Burundian Franc at 2,968. Africa’s strongest currencies are led by the Tunisian Dinar at 2.90 per dollar, the Libyan Dinar at 5.40, the Moroccan Dirham at 9.91, the Ghanaian Cedi at 12.31, and the Botswanan P**a at 14.15.
