The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has reportedly released the former Sokoto governor, Aminu Tambuwal, after spending over 24 hours in the custody of the anti-graft agency.

Tambuwal was detained at the corporate headquarters of the anti-graft agency on Monday, August 11, over the allegation that he fraudulentlt made cash withdrawal of N189 billion when he was serving as the governor of Sokoto State.

Sources within the anti-graft agency disclosed that the action of the former government was against the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The former governor had honoured the commission's invitation at about 11am on Monday. He was then taken into custody after it was said that the former governor failed to answer qustions that were asked from him.

According to Daily Trust, the release of the former governor was confirmed by one of EFCC's crack detectives, who disclosed that Tambuwal was granted an administrative bail and would be allowed to leave the agency's headquarters after meeting the bail conditions.

The detective said:

“He has just already been granted an administrative bail. We’ve extracted what we need from him and he will soon leave our headquarters after perfecting his bail conditions."

However, he declined to comment on whether the former governor would be charged to court or not.

Tambuwal's release came after the African Democratic Congress (ADC) claimed that the federal government was using the EFCC to discredit and harass opposition leaders.

Bolaji Abdullahi, the interim national publicity secretary of the ADC, made the allegation in a statement on Tuesday, August 12. He alleged that the commission has commenced “a choreographed media trial” against major opposition figures.

Abdullahi alleged that the sudden detention of Aminu Tambuwal, the former Sokoto governor and the "urgent" request by the EFCC on information about the seven-month tenure of Emeka Ihedioha, the former governor of Imo State, were politically motivated.

The spokesperson of the ADC also alleged that the EFCC was making a move to investigate the party's interim national chairman over his time as the Senate president.

Popular TikTok star Peller has taken to social media to express outrage over a ₦36 million income tax bill allegedly issued to him by the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS). Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The social media personality, who shot to fame just last year, made the revelation during a livestream conversation with Nigerian singer Peruzzi, which was later reposted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.

“I Just Came Into the Limelight” – Peller

Peller told viewers:

“Taskforce said I should pay ₦36 million for tax. I don’t have anything. I just came into the limelight last year.”

According to him, the amount is excessive, especially since he claims the government has never supported his work as a TikTok content creator.

Peruzzi Responds, Advises Quick Settlement

During the livestream, Peruzzi questioned why Peller had not been paying taxes and reminded him of his obligations as a Nigerian citizen.

“Why haven’t you paid your taxes? Do you know how much I pay as tax? I won’t mention it here, but it’s more than the bill they gave you,” Peruzzi said, warning Peller that ignoring the demand could lead to imprisonment.

He urged the TikToker to negotiate for more time and settle the bill.

Peller Claims He’s Being Targeted

Peller insisted the government’s move was influenced by his public display of wealth and disclosure of his TikTok earnings. He argued that most of his income comes from international audiences, not Nigeria, and questioned why he was being taxed at such a high rate.

The incident has since sparked debates online over influencer income taxation and the Lagos State Government’s approach to enforcing tax laws on social media personalities.

PRESS STATEMENT: DECISION TO WITHDRAW CRIMINAL COMPLAINT AGAINST MS. COMFORT EMMANSON AND TO ADDRESS RELATED MATTERS

1. In the last 48 hours, I have been in consultation with critical stakeholders in the Aviation Sector and those involved in the unfortunate incidents regarding the unruly behaviours of certain individuals at our airports of recent.

2. Though regrettable, we think valuable lessons have been learnt by all sides to these incidents and airport security protocol, especially, have been well highlighted for the travelling public. If nothing at all, the episodes have undoubtedly helped to raise public awareness about appropriate conduct within the aviation space.

3. As highlighted in my previous statements on the last two incidents, clear wrongs were committed by both the offending passengers and staff of the airlines involved from all the evidence available to us and those available to the public. It is clear that all the actors involved cannot continue to highlight the injury or injustice done to them without acknowledging their own equal culpability.

5. Therefore, after reviewing the entire incidents, including appeals made by well-meaning individuals and remorse shown by the actors, the following decisions have been reached:

THE CASE OF IBOM AIRLINE AND MS. COMFORT EMMANSON

(a) In the case of the unruly passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, on the Ibom Airline on Sunday, the 10th of August, 2025, I have conferred with Ibom Airline to withdraw the Complaint against her today. When the Police took her Statement in presence of her lawyer, she exhibited great remorse for her conduct.

(b) Subsequent to the withdrawal of the complaint by the Complainant, the CP of Airport Command and the Police Prosecutor will immediately take the remaining steps to facilitate her release from Kirikiri Prisons within this week.

(c) I have also conferred with the leadership of the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) and have appealed to them to lift the life-time flying ban imposed on her, to which they agreed. The details of the resolution will be made public by the AON subsequently.

THE CASE OF VALUEJET AND WASIU AYINDE MARSHALL (KWAM 1)

(d) In the case of KWAM 1, the NCAA is to reduce his flight ban to a one-month period. FAAN will also work with the music star with a view to engaging him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward.

(e) Having publicly demonstrated penitence, the NCAA is also to withdraw its criminal complaints against KWAM 1 earlier lodged with the Police.

(f) In the case of Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, and the co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba of VALUEJET, the NCAA is to restore their licenses after the same period of one-month ban after undergoing some mandatory professional re-appraisal. The details will be announced by the NCAA.

AIRLINE OPERATORS, AVIATION AND OTHER GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

6. I have directed all relevant Aviation agencies in collaboration with other complementary agencies outside aviation to IMMEDIATELY begin a retreat NEXT WEEK to properly retrain and prepare our Aviation security personnel on how to deal with errant and disruptive passengers and how to deescalate potentially explosive situations. The retreat will be fully covered by the Press with the opportunity to ask all the relevant questions.

7. The Airlines will also have their own session when the conduct and attitude of their staff towards members of the travelling public will be in full focus.

FINAL COMMENTS

8. These above decisions were taken by Government and the airline operators purely on COMPASSIONATE grounds as Government will never pander to base sentiments, politically-motivated views or warped legal opinions when clear encroachment of our laws are involved.

9. We are also sending a CLEAR MESSAGE that we take safety and security in the aviation sector very seriously and we have decided to draw a line after these clemencies.
