JUST IN: Nigeria Govt Reacts To Clash Between Israel, Palestine
The federal government has called for a de-escalation of violence between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas militant group following the outbreak of hostilities on Saturday.

The FG in a statement through the Foreign Affairs Ministry, expressed deep concern about the situation and called on both sides to exercise restraint and prioritize the safety of civilians.

“The cycle of violence and retaliation that the current escalation has assumed, only serves to perpetuate an unending cycle of pain and suffering for the civilian population, that bear the brunt of every conflict,” the statement read.

The ministry called on both sides to give room for humanitarian considerations and to resolve the conflict through dialogue.

The full statement reads:

PRESS STATEMENT

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA CALLS FOR DE-ESCALATION OF HOSTILITIES BETWEEN ISRAEL AND HAMAS

The Federal Government of Nigeria is deeply concerned about the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas in the early hours of Saturday, 7th October, 2023 and calls for de-escalation and ceasefire.

2. The cycle of violence and retaliation that the current escalation has assumed, only serves to perpetuate an unending cycle of pain and suffering for the civilian population, that bear the brunt of every conflict.

3. The Federal Government of Nigeria, therefore, calls on both sides to exercise restraint, prioritize the safety of civilians and give room for humanitarian considerations.

4. We are therefore calling for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue.

Amb. Yusuf M. Tuggar (OON)
Minister of Foreign Affairs
Recall that the Palestinian armed group Hamas, early Saturday, launched a surprise attack against Israel, the most serious escalation since the two sides fought an 11-day war in 2021.

Hamas said it had fired 5,000 rockets, while Israel confirmed that the group’s fighters had entered its territory.

The Israeli military responded with air strikes on targets in Gaza and said it had mobilised tens of thousands of reservists.

More than a hundred people have been confirmed dead.

BREAKING: Appeal Court Restores Rep Member Sacked For Certificate Forgery

The court of appeal has reversed the sack of Mukhtar Umar Yarima, member representing Tarauni Federal Constituency, in the green chamber under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP.

On August 11th, the election of Mr Yarima was invalidated by the National and State House of Assembly elections petition tribunal in Kano.

The Justice I.P. Chima-led tribunal had declared Mr Yerima ineligible for presenting a forged copy of his primary school certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The tribunal had held that Yerima’s defence that he had made a change of name in 2022 did not hold water having been using three (Umar Mukhtar Zakari) names on his International passports since 2009 while his primary school certificate still bears Umar Mukhtar.

It also held that the said primary school, Hausawa Primary School, has disown the certificate tendered by the lawmaker.

However, a three-member panel of the court, in a judgement on Saturday in Abuja, upheld the arguments by counsel to Zakari and the NNPP, Mahmud Magaji (SAN), that the tribunal erred in law in reaching its decision.

In the lead judgement by Justice Obande Ogbuinya, the Court of Appeal held that the tribunal was wrong to have concluded that Zakari forged his credentials when the petitioners failed to establish their claim to that effect.

The Court of Appeal, in its judgement on Saturday, held that the respondents, who were petitioners at the tribunal, failed to prove that Zakari was not the same person who attended the school and was awarded the certificate.

It proceeded to set aside the judgement of the tribunal, allowed the appeal, and affirmed Zakari’s election.

Tinubu Suspends Buhari’s N-Power Programme Indefinitely

Federal government intervention programme

The President Bola Tinubu-led federal government has announced the indefinite suspended N-Power programme.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, who announced the suspension of the programme during an interview with TVC News on Saturday said that the programme was suspended sequel to several flaws within the scheme.

According to the Minister, the government has launched an investigation into the utilisation of funds meant for the programme since it started.

Edu also noted that some of the beneficiaries of N-Power are not found in their place of primary assignments yet, they expect monthly stipends, adding that some of the beneficiaries should have left the programme since 2022 but are still on the payroll.

The N-Power Programme was introduced by former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration as part of efforts to combat youth unemployment and promote social development in the country.

The minister during the interview said, “We must go back to look into N-Power and understand what the problems are so we will basically suspend the programme for now until we are done with proper investigation into the utilisation of funds into the N-Power programme.

“We want to know how many persons are basically on the program right now, how many persons are owed, the amount they are owed. We are totally restructuring N-Power and expanding it.

“There are lots going on. We met people who are supposed to have exited the program since last year and they are still on, claiming that they are still teaching.

“Sometimes we contact the school or the places where they are working and they are not there. They are not working yet they keep claiming that they are being owed eight or nine months stipends.

“About 80 percent of them are not working yet they are claiming salaries.”

NADECO Calls For Tinubu’s Resignation, Says President’s Attitude To Power Embarrassing
A pro-democracy group, the National Democratic Coalition has called for the resignation of President Bola Tinubu over allegations surrounding certificate forgery at Chicago State University, amongst others.

The Executive Director, NADECO USA, Lloyd Ukwu, made the call in a statement, on Thursday. He said the responsibility that was commensurate with the office of the President of Nigeria required utmost integrity and adherence to the rule of law.

“The allegations of forgery, if proven true, not only cast a shadow over the presidency but also undermine the credibility of Nigeria on the international stage,” he said.

According to him, “You would all recall that the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) was the first to call for the resignation of Bola Ahmed Tinubu due to his Chicago State University certificate forgery. And today, we are reiterating this call.

“NADECO being a prominent voice for democracy, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria, is deeply concerned about recent allegations regarding the authenticity of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s academic credentials. In the light of the evidence pointing towards forgery of a certificate from Chicago State University, NADECO calls upon President Tinubu to resign from his position as the President of the most populous black country in the world.

“Forgery is a serious offense both in the United States and Nigeria, carrying severe legal consequences. According to U.S. law, the penalty for forgery can include imprisonment and fines. In Nigeria, forgery is a criminal offense under various sections of the Criminal Code and Penal Code, with potential penalties ranging from imprisonment to fines, depending on the circumstances.

“NADECO believes that holding a position of such immense responsibility as the President of Nigeria requires the utmost integrity and adherence to the rule of law. The allegations of forgery, if proven true, not only cast a shadow over the presidency but also undermine the credibility of Nigeria on the international stage. Such actions risk bringing international embarrassment to our great nation.

“Furthermore, NADECO emphasises that leaders must set an example for the citizens they represent. Upholding the highest ethical standards is not only a legal requirement but a moral imperative for anyone holding public office. We urge President Tinubu to step down voluntarily in the interest of preserving the integrity of the presidency and the nation.”

He observed that Nigeria was currently grappling with myriads of challenges, stressing that with the allegations of forgery, the Tinubu was already distracted and was rather leading the country to “international embarrassment”.

He added, “In these challenging times, Nigeria needs a leader who can focus on the pressing issues facing our country, such as security, economic stability, and social development, without the distraction of forgery allegations. A voluntary resignation would demonstrate a commitment to the principles of accountability and transparency that NADECO has long advocated for.

“NADECO calls upon all relevant authorities, both in Nigeria and the United States, to thoroughly investigate these allegations to ensure justice is served. We also urge President Tinubu to reflect upon the gravity of the situation, consider the best interests of Nigeria and its people and resign.”

Recall that a United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, had on Saturday, ruled in favour of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, and ordered that the Chicago State University should release President Tinubu’s academic record to the former vice president. The Court, on Monday, released the academic records which have generated mixed reactions from the citizenry.

Tinubu’s Certificate Saga: Join Me In This Fight, Nigeria’s Reputation At Stake, Atiku Begs Obi, Kwankwaso
Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar has warned that the reputation of the country is at stake unless justice is delivered in the case of alleged forged certificates submitted by President Bola Tinubu to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Addressing a world press conference in Abuja, Abubakar also rallied Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)’s Rabiu Kwankwaso to join his quest to uphold the ground rules for contesting elections in the country.

“Let me call on all well-meaning Nigerians, leaders of thoughts, our religious, traditional, community and political leaders and in particular, Governor Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP and the leaders of every political party in Nigeria and indeed every single person who loves this country as I do and who wishes nothing but the best for this country as I do, to join me in this campaign to enshrine probity, accountability and the basic principles of justice, morality, and uprightness in our country and in our government. This is a task for every one of us,” he said during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.

The former Vice President recently received copies of Tinubu’s academic from Chicago State University to aid his appeal at the Supreme Court against the declaration of Tinubu as the winner of the disputed 2023 presidential election.

Abubakar also dismissed insinuations that he had stabbed Tinubu, who was once considered his friend at the back through his actions.

But the former VP clarified that he and Tinubu had initially shared same interests but was betrayed by Tinubu after he (Abubakar) refused to make the current President his Running Mate at the time.

Tribune Online reports that Primeboy was declared wanted on Wednesday after he failed to show up at the police station two weeks after an invitation was sent to him.

The police also promised a reward of N1 million to anyone with useful tips and information that could lead to his arrest. However, in the latest development, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, revealed on Thursday through his X-account that Primeboy has finally turned himself in.

According to him, the late Mohbad’s close ally has since been taken into custody for interrogation.

Supreme Court Fixes December 15 For Judgment on Release of Nnamdi Kanu
The Supreme Court has fixed December 15 to deliver its judgement on the appeal that is seeking to compel the Federal Government to release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, from detention.

A five-member panel led by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun fixed the date after counsel for both the Federal Government and the detained IPOB leader adopted their final briefs of argument. While Kanu Agabi led Kanu’s team of lawyers, Mike Ozehkome, presented his appeal to the apex court panel.

Ozehkome prayed the court to not only order the immediate release of his client from detention but to equally award very heavy and punitive costs against the Federal Government.

In his submission, however, counsel to the Federal Government, Tijani Gazzali, urged the apex court to uphold the amended brief of argument he filed on May 3, 2023.
He prayed the court to allow FG’s appeal, set aside the judgement of the Court of Appeal which ordered Kanu’s release and order the resumption of his trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges.

Gazzali further urged the apex court to dismiss Kanu’s cross-appeal.

On October 13, 2022, the Court of Appeal Abuja delivered a judgement ordering Kanu’s release from detention.

In a unanimous decision by a three-member panel, the appellate court equally quashed a 15-count terrorism charge that FG entered against the detained IPOB leader before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The court said it was satisfied that FG flagrantly violated all known laws when it forcefully rendered Kanu from Kenya to the country for the continuation of his trial.

It held that such arbitrary use of power by the Nigerian government divested the trial court of the jurisdiction to continue with Kanu’s trial.

However, dissatisfied with the judgement, the Federal Government took the matter before the Supreme Court. It further persuaded the appellate court to suspend the ex*****on of the judgement pending the determination of its appeal.

Minister of Interior Orders NIS To Process Passports Within 2 Weeks
Nigerians will no longer wait for more than two weeks to be issued the green passport once they apply, the federal government has assured.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo yesterday in Abuja announced a two-week timeline for the processing of passport applications, saying the era of Nigerians waiting for months to get their international passports was over.
He gave the assurance at a media parley to review his directive to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) where he ordered them to clear over 204,000 backlog of passport applications.

Tunji-Ojo who apologised profusely to Nigerians that the clearance of the backlog spilled into three weeks, as against the two weeks deadline he initially gave the service, praised officers and men of the NIS for working day and night, including weekends and public holidays, to meet with his directive.

He promised that, by December, applicants will be able to upload their passports photographs online with specifications and with their supporting documents, rather than go the Immigration officers for capturing.
