NIGERIA MARKS 7TH NATIONAL DAY OF IDENTITY: PRESIDENT TINUBU, TOP MINISTERS, LAWMAKERS, AND GLOBAL PARTNERS RALLY BEHIND NIMC’S DRIVE FOR PKI AS THE BACKBONE OF DIGITAL PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) today commemorated the 7th National Day of Identity, celebrated under the theme “PKI – Backbone to Digital Public Infrastructure.”
The 2025 edition was graced by a distinguished line-up of dignitaries, underscoring the national and global importance of digital identity as the foundation of governance, planning, and sustainable development.
Leading the Federal Government’s delegation was the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, CON, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
The President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives were ably represented by Senator Victor Umeh, Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Identity Card and Population, and Hon. Okunjimi Odimayo, Chairman of the House Committee on Population and National Identity, respectively.
Also in attendance were the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, and the Minister of Regional Development, Dr. Ibrahim Abdullahi.
From key national agencies, notable attendees included the Director-General of NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, Engr. Uzoma Nwagba as the MD/CEO of the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), and the Director-General of NYSC, Brig. Gen. Brigadier General O.O. Nafiu, and the National Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Homegrown School Feeding Programme, Dr. Princess Aderemi F. Adebowale.
The Chairman of the National Population Commission, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, was also present, alongside the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, and the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida. They joined esteemed royal fathers and international partners who continue to support Nigeria’s identity ecosystem.
This distinguished catalogue of dignitaries underscores the broad inter-agency and inter-organisational collaboration championed by the Director-General/CEO of NIMC, Engr. (Dr.) Abisoye Coker-Odusote, in pursuit of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16.9: “By 2030, provide legal identity for all, including birth registration.” Her remarkable strides in advancing identity management and strengthening digital public infrastructure have also earned her recognition as the Interim Chairperson of the African PKI Consortium.
The 2025 National Day of Identity reaffirms Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to building a secure, inclusive, and trusted digital identity ecosystem, with Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) serving as the backbone of its digital public infrastructure.
