THE CROSS THROUGH THE EYES OF LITTLE BOY GIDEON!

Last year’s Passion Play in our parish at St Andrews wasn’t just another drama.
It was a thought-provoking and life-changing experience.
And for little boy Gideon (then 4, now 5), it was destiny-shaping, I would say.

Since that day, every time Gideon stepped into the church premises, he would begin a quiet search… not for toys… not for snacks… but for sticks. Small pieces of wood he could join together to form crosses.
One after another, he would run to me with a smile:
“FadaBen, look at the cross I made!”
Then off again to build another… and another… dreaming of making one as big as the one “our Jesus” of last year😊 hung on.😂

At a point, Gideon moved from simply showing me his crosses to asking for sellotape.
Week after week, Sunday after Sunday, he never stopped reminding me.
I kept on promising him that I’d get the sellotape.
But Gideon wouldn’t let me rest.
He had his plans on and wasn’t ready to hear my excuses.
This went on for months.
I kept on forgetting.
But why won’t i forget???😂
With the whole lot on my mind… sellotape would be the last thing to bear in mind…😂

One Saturday, he reminded me after their catechism classes to not forget to get him the sellotape while coming for Mass the following day… wahala🤦🏽
And guess what FadaBen did…🤔
HE FORGOT AGAIN😭😂
Old age🤦🏽😊 Nwoke na-ife 😂

This time around, Gideon got angry and said to me: “FadaBen, you forgot again. But I reminded you yesterday. I’m not happy.🤦🏽‍♂️
I apologized again and gave the final promise, which I fulfilled.

It was then I knew I had to do something special and inspiring for this child.

So I got one of the crucifixes we had in the house, cleaned it up, decorated it, and presented it to him at Mass a few weeks ago.
And today, on this Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, guess who showed up to Mass holding his crucifix high?😊
King Gideon😊😂😂

I don’t yet know the plans God has in store for this lil’ boy.
But I do know this; that the seeds of faith are taking root in him.
And I pray that God order his steps, bless his days, and secure his future in His love. Amen.

May the Cross always remain our sign of victory and hope.
