President Goodluck Jonathan's tenure saw several key infrastructural achievements that contributed to Nigeria's development:
1. Power Sector Reforms: Jonathan initiated significant reforms in the power sector, aimed at addressing Nigeria's energy challenges. Under his administration, the privatization of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) occurred, and numerous power plants were commissioned, including the 750 MW Geregu and the 1,000 MW Egbin Power Station expansion.
2. Road Infrastructure: Jonathan's government invested in major road construction and rehabilitation projects, particularly the construction of new expressways and the expansion of existing ones. The Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan expressways received substantial attention, helping ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity.
3. Rail Infrastructure: The President oversaw the revival of the rail transport system. The Lagos-Kano rail project, which included the modernization of the Abuja-Kaduna railway line, was completed, making rail travel more efficient.
4. Agricultural Infrastructure: Jonathan’s administration also emphasized the modernization of agricultural infrastructure. The implementation of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda led to the construction of modern storage facilities, irrigation systems, and roads linking rural farming communities to urban markets.
5. Aviation Infrastructure: The President’s government initiated the overhaul of airports nationwide, modernizing terminals and improving aviation security. Airports like Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos were upgraded to meet international standards.
These projects, along with others, laid the groundwork for further infrastructural development during and after his tenure.
