Monster During the Day, Beast at Night Part 2

When she found out she was pregnant, she believed the baby would change everything.
She ran to him with trembling joy, holding the small clinic paper in her hand.

"Daniel... we're going to have a child!"
For one bright second, his face softened.
Then it darkened. "Are you sure it's mine?"
he asked quietly. The question cut deeper than any blow.

The beatings did not stop. In fact, they became more dangerous. He no longer used his hands openly. He pushed. He grabbed. He squeezed her arms hard enough to leave fingerprints like purple bracelets. Always careful. Always where clothes could hide the truth.

At church, he placed his hand protectively on her belly. "Our miracle," he would announce proudly.

He was two sided, Pastor during the Day, Beast at Night.Part 1

Women in bright headwraps sang his praises. Men shook his hand with respect. Children ran to him after Sunday school because he always had sweets in his pockets. His sermons could melt stone. He preached about kindness, patience, and the sacred duty of a husband to protect his wife.

"Marriage," he would say, lifting his Bible high, "is a reflection of heaven!"
The congregation would shout, "Amen!" Cathy used to shout the loudest.
When she first married him, she felt chosen. Blessed. Everyone envied her.

She was the pastor's wife - elegant, soft-spoken, always smiling beside him in the front pew. She wore long flowing dresses and carried herself like royalty.
But night did not recognize the pastor.

At exactly 10 p.m., something shifted.
It began subtly. His voice would lose its warmth. His eyes, once gentle, hardened like dry clay. He would complain about the food being too salty, the house too noisy, her breathing too loud.
"You embarrass me," he would whisper.
The whisper was worse than a shout.
Then came the first slap.

Cathy told herself it was stress. Church matters. Spiritual attacks. The devil testing their marriage. After all, he prayed every night before bed. Surely : man who prayed could not be cruel.
