🇳🇬 ZAKI BIAM 2001: WHY DO MANY TIV PEOPLE STILL HOLD OLUSEGUN OBASANJO RESPONSIBLE?
Twenty-four years have passed, but the pain has not faded.
For many Tiv families, the events of October 2001 are not just history—they are a painful memory that still lives in their hearts.
The crisis began after the reported killing of 19 Nigerian soldiers during communal violence near the Benue–Taraba border. In response, President Olusegun Obasanjo, as Nigeria's Commander-in-Chief, ordered a military operation in parts of Benue State.
However, the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the soldiers have remained one of the most controversial issues in Benue's history.
Many Tiv people believe that the full truth was never established before the military operation was launched. According to local accounts, the fighting was between Tiv and Jukun groups, and many residents have questioned whether those responsible for the attack were ever conclusively identified. Some eyewitness accounts claim that the attackers arrived in civilian vehicles and motorcycles while wearing military-style clothing. These claims remain disputed and have never been conclusively resolved.
Despite these unanswered questions, the military operation went ahead.
According to reports by human rights organizations, several communities—including Zaki Biam, Gbeji, Vaase, Anyiin, and surrounding villages—were devastated. Many civilians lost their lives, homes were destroyed, businesses were wiped out, and thousands of people were displaced. Many of those affected were women, children, and elderly people who were never shown to have participated in the killing of the soldiers.
For this reason, many Tiv people continue to hold President Olusegun Obasanjo politically and morally responsible for authorizing the military operation. They believe innocent people suffered before the truth surrounding the deaths of the soldiers had been fully established.
Whether one agrees with this view or not, the Zaki Biam military operation remains one of the darkest and most controversial chapters in Nigeria's democratic history. It raises enduring questions about justice, accountability, military conduct, and the protection of innocent civilians during security operations.
History should never be used to spread hatred. Instead, it should help us seek truth, preserve the memories of those who suffered, and ensure that such tragedies are never repeated.
