Anambra Police Arrest Two Over Fake Kidnap, Recover ₦1.2m Ransom as CP Orutugu Decries Rising Moral Decay
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects for allegedly staging a fake kidnap and extorting ransom from family members, recovering ₦1.2 million in the process.
The suspects—Nmesoma Josephine Nwoye (23) and Chibuike Ogbu (24)—were apprehended by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, following intelligence-led investigations. Police findings revealed that Nmesoma, in connivance with her boyfriend Chibuike, conspired to stage her own abduction in a bid to swindle her family.
According to police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects initially demanded ₦15 million ransom but later settled for ₦3 million, which was paid directly into the supposed victim’s account. Out of the sum, ₦1.2 million has already been recovered by the police as exhibits.
Reacting to the disturbing development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the act as a reflection of deepening moral decadence in society.
“It is disheartening that young people are now resorting to staging crimes for selfish gains. This is a clear indication of rising moral decay in our society,” Orutugu lamented.
He urged parents, guardians, and religious leaders to intensify efforts in instilling sound values, integrity, and discipline in young people to stem the growing wave of self-inflicted criminality.
The CP further warned youths against indulging in acts of deceit and crime, stressing that “the long arm of the law will always catch up with offenders, no matter how cleverly disguised their schemes may be.”
The suspects are currently in custody and investigations are ongoing.
